Born in, lived in, worked in Derby. My entire life. So I’m feeling qualified to put some commentary to this. And it might be different to other Derbians. I wasn’t incensed that Derby was last in the list. Derby MADE it onto the list of 25 cities (there’s 76 cities in the UK). That’s proof that the tourism work being done is have a good effect, it’s bringing people to Derby. If I was someone who yielded enough power to make changes in this city of ours I would be using this feedback to make the right strategic changes for the city. Because yes there are things being done here but they are mostly glory projects that people get behind and frankly there’s been a woeful lack of care of our heritage until recent years. Don’t get me started on the Hippodrome (or someone hand the keys over to me!). There are issues in Derby and I’ve been to many events where they are glossed over. So if we stop wallpapering the cracks and listen to this feedback then act on it we’re going to climb this particular Which list. Because Derby IS a nice little city. It has heritage galore. It does sit in stunning countryside literally a stones throw from the city centre. It’s just lost its way over the last few decades resulting in this feedback. I would say to the local politicians and city leaders take notice of this feedback and make the RIGHT decisions to make our city more visitor friendly. Then we might make it into the top 10. Carry on as we are with expensive parking, huge new builds of apartment blocks, leaving buildings falling apart, cancelling loved events, closing parking down, focussing only on the big businesses and a load of other stuff then we’ll fall off that list which will have a detrimental effect on the city and its people. And that is more important than being on any list in whatever position. Here ends the Seleena rant.

A £2bn development with 7,000 homes as well as shops, schools, social and medical facilities is being planned for a site near Edinburgh Airport. If planning permission is granted, West Town will span 205 acres between Gogar Roundabout and Ingliston Park and Ride. It is described as the single biggest homes-led development in Edinburgh in modern times. The development is designed so residents could live there without needing a car. Developers said the site would also have 27 acres of parks and a network of cycle, running and walking tracks. The West Town Edinburgh consortium, which is behind the plan, was formed in April 2021 by Drum Property Group. Step outside your comfort zone! Location is king when it comes to the success of a small to medium sized enterprise. Proximity to the right target audience being the most obvious consideration. Its role in attracting and retaining staff. The cost of local products, rents and supply chains. Access to trades, talent and business networks. Brand visibility and foot traffic. The list goes on. Micro businesses understandably tend to stick close to home, already knowing their market, customer base, and having identified a local gap that they can fill. Plus of course the convenient daily commute when added to an already overwhelming schedule. However often times, small to medium sized enterprises, which have more scope to be strategic and agile in their choice of location, can lean towards the safer option of sticking close to a known location. Whilst for many whom are focused solely on economic growth and new emerging affluent communities this will be viewed as positive and a hoorah for all the investment that has been made by the money men. But for me with my critical eye it's a far cry from the lives of many local people for whom the gentrification and rapid development of the area is having a negative impact - on the very edge of these eye catching, grandeous developments are disadvantaged and neglected communities, that lack access to basic services, families already crippled by the cost of living being priced out of the area as fancy supermarkets crop up and more new developments threaten to close essential stores to replace them with upmarket artisan shops and apartments for young professionals from across the UK. Young people who lack access to basic spaces to play football as the local pitch is chained up and rented out to Premier league clubs for training and outreach. The same young people who are demonised and criminalised if they go over to Salford Quays looking for fun or something to do, who see all of this development and recognise sadly its not for them. The grim reality is that Salford has terrible mortality rares, already has poor air quality because of traffic which is only made worse by more commuters and is in the midst of a housing epidemic that has seen over 600 children forced to live in temporary accomodation, often in one room together with their family, without cooking equiptment, without any luxuries like televisions or even kettles, far from their friends and schools, as there is no adequate housing available and everything is too expensive. The crisis is so bad we have seen tents outside the town hall, people turned away from housing options and told to sleep in cars and on streets because they are not vulnerable enough. This absolute erosion of our health, our lives and our communities is one of the biggest contributing factors as to why we also have such a problem with Poverty and Inequality in the City. This picture and these statements for me are a stark visual reminder of the deeply entrenched Inequality we battle with daily. With every new development another chunk of our City is lost and the proud memories of our heritage and hardwork crumble to dust like our ancestors who built this City with their own bare and dirty hands. Theres nothing to celebrate until we are all thriving - not just the elite and the affluent. #Salford
