Does technology and video replay play too big of a role in sport today? Saturday's Rugby World Cup France 2023 final was a nail biter with the New Zealand All Blacks losing by 1 point to the South Africa Springboks. Something that I've talked about the most with my fellow ruggers is how much of a role TMO (rugby's video replay system) played in the match. - There were 3 yellow cards that were reviewed to see if they should be upgraded to a red. One card for NZ's captain was upgraded to a red in the first half, which was a disaster for the All Blacks. - New Zealand had a try called back for a knock-on that happened 5 phases before, even though the typical TMO rule is 2 phases. - South Africa was given a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on that was also caught by the TMO with less than 10 minutes to go in the game. This could have cost SA the game after leading the whole time. TMO has been involved in the sport of rugby for years now, but this was the first game where I feel like it played a significant role in the match. I had no particular interest either way in the match, but I think whether you're a Springbok or All Black fan, you can likely agree that the TMO played a huge role during that game. For my fellow sports fans out there, whether it's rugby or any other sport, how far do you think technology should be able to change the game? Honestly curious to hear your feedback.

Update:South Africa was the victor in Rugby World Cup last weekend. They won their match over New Zealand 12-11. The numbers behind the World Rugby Cup tournament showed the power of the Sport and why it will be successful in the U.S. Let’s start with 800 million viewers for the WRC tournament and proceed to 3.1 billion impressions. The WRC tournament will be played on U.S. soil in 2031. That data and impending event in the U.S. in 2031 translates into a huge market opportunity for a League to launch a business model in major U.S. Markets like Boston and Seattle. Rugby has the appeal of Football with the entertainment value of the UFC. Expect Fanatics to take notice. They own the apparel business for sports and with their acquisition of Penn Gaming they have entered into the lucrative Sports Wagering industry which is projected to hit $182Bn by 2030. How will teams progress to RWC 2023 QF and RWC 2027 automatic qualifications & what do Japan Rugby Football Union need to do to reach the QFs from Pool D? - The match winner of Japan v Argentina on Sunday in Nantes will qualify for the quarter-finals as runner-up, but a draw could be enough to secure second place for Japan or Argentina, depending on whether one or both secure a try-bonus point and Samoa’s result against England. If both sides get a try-scoring bonus points in a draw, Argentina will finish second on points difference (+46 to +18). - If the match does end in a draw, Japan must be the only team to get a try-scoring bonus point to finish second in Pool C. - Samoa must beat England by 29 points and get a try-bonus point to have the best points difference of the three teams to finish second, Argentina would then finish third on points difference from Japan to qualify for RWC 2027. RWC - Five lessons from the quarter finals   The Rugby world cup in France finally reached the knock out stage this week-end, with four dramatic matches: two in Marseilles and two in Paris. What have we learnt about the teams and their respective world standing? 1.      There is only one unbeaten side remaining in the tournament and it is the sole representative of the northern hemisphere in the semis-finals. That is about as much as you can say for an England side that almost lost of Fiji, still yet to excite the fans.   2.      The two Paris quarter finals were of such intensity and quality that they were in effective semi-finals. That both Ireland and France are now out of the competition seems to be a travesty. They should rightfully play for third place, but of course won’t.   3.      Argentina deserved their win over Wales and proved that once again that you should never under-estimate the pumas. Fiji gained enormous respect for the way they came back against England and showed that their loss to Portugal in the pool stage was merely a blip.   4.      With three out of four southern hemisphere teams in the semis, it looks like the northern hemisphere is has some catching up to do. Given the skill and determination shown by both Ireland and France, I’m not sure this is a fair reflection of the relative team standings.   5.      What will happen next week in the semis? Will the pumas upset the All Blacks and pull off a miracle, or will England expunge the ghosts of Yokahoma and beat the Boks? You’d get good odds on either outcome but it is now looking like a South Africa New Zealand final.   Any thoughts?

A few people have asked me for my pick ahead of the World Cup in France – To be honest, I’ve changed my mind several times over the past few weeks, as I truly believe there are four teams in the running for the title. Prior to that win at Twickenham, I was struggling to see how the Springboks might upset the top-ranked nations – having not beaten Ireland, France or New Zealand in the preceding 12 months. Then they went and delivered a statement at Twickenham, scoring five tries in a record win. Some have dismissed the result due to the fact that the game was a warm-up, but the performance itself spoke volumes. The tournament in France promises to be the most fascinating and competitive World Cup in history. At the top end, you have four teams gunning for the title, and at the other, you have a few ‘tier-two’ sides Fiji and Samoa who have a genuine shot at making the playoffs. Thanks to the draw, Argentina could build up some steam and go deep into the tournament. I think we may see the Boks battling France in the final – and yet, both teams will have to fight for their lives just to make the semis. Some matches will be more important than others over the course of the pool phase. When you sit down and really consider the permutations in Pool B, you begin to understand why the Bok coaches are so desperate to beat Scotland this Sunday. Legends of English Rugby are bowing out tonight when Northampton Saints host Saracens in the Premiership semi-final. It’s going to be au revoir for either Courtney Lawes and Lewis Ludlam from Northampton or Owen Farrell, Mako Vunipola and Billy Vunipola. The winners will only have 1 more week before they are across the channel too. Whichever side of the fence you sit on it's going to be an emotional evening. The bigger picture is that these 5 players are going to be lost to the English Club Game. They have a lot still to offer, they don't want to go but their clubs can't afford them. This is the real sadness. From what's been reported all 5 would rather stay here and see their career out over the next number of years. Questions have to be asked of the RFU and Premiership Rugby. How has the Premiership been overtaken by France and Japan as the richest places in the world to play rugby? Why can't we afford to pay our players more than France and Japan?
