My advice on a day of celebrating diversity: Embrace your uniqueness and be confident in the value you add 💪

We're always listening & learning from our people at Primark around how we can build a culture that fuels performance. This year, we made an overdue (!) change to our holiday observances in the United States, based on feedback from our colleagues & candidates, including through our Your Voice #colleagueengagement survey -- adding two additional days off for our full-time colleagues in the US. This change means that for the first time we will officially observe #Juneteenth this week, following from our addition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in January. Our holiday observances are one way that we're Investing in an Inclusive Experience -- from recognizing moments that matter to supporting work-life balance -- it's about how we bring Our Value of #Caring and Our Behavior of #Inclusion to life. In addition to time off, we also bring this recognition into our business, with each store creating their own engagement activities -- and I can't wait to see what the stores have planned for this week! ...It's the one mistake all founders make. The vision is not complete. You're spread across so many different activities. And you're always onto the next thing. I'd like to say that we're different and that we didn't fall into that trap. Truth is, 8 years on, celebrating still doesn't come naturally. It's not that we don't want to or that we don't enjoy it. It's because the body of work isn't done. We probably won't be satisfied until it is. But we know how it is important it is for everyone concerned with KYM to do it. Celebrating creates energy and morale to help build foster positive work environment. Celebrating acknowledges all the efforts with or with or without the achievements. The practice of celebrating not only rewards those involved but also sets a standard and provides motivation for the team to be as good as it can be. Celebrating doesn't stop at the good stuff. There's plenty to celebrate in our failures too. The biggest reason to celebrate for us is making people feel like the belong. Whilst it may still be in our personal development plans, we have awesome people around us that keep us accountable to it. It’s been two years since I joined John Holland (was great to be reminded today by the company)-Taking a leap of faith moving to a new organisation, industry and focus…. but wow what a ride. I’ve been fortunate to work on some great programs and tasks that are making a real impact to employees lives and their experiences at work. The Construction industry is dynamic and some of the takeaway reflections I have are: 🔴 Having a clear strategy (Inclusion Strategy) and direction that people can get behind makes your communications and work much easier. 🔴 It’s not necessarily about having resources but knowing who to call upon for help and support. 🔴 Change management is critical and setting clear owners and accountabilities for those leading programs of work to see them thrive. 🔴 Just because you get it and want to run, doesn’t mean others do and you might need to go slow to start. 🔴 Delivering on cultural change and embedding new practices isn’t straight forward but when it works and positively impacts people’s lives its all the satisfaction in the world. 🔴 You don’t always get things right but that’s part of the journey and growth. From developing a new Inclusion Strategy, working on an innovative project embedding flexible work into projects, improving people policies, Co-Chairing on reconciliation and working with our employee resource groups the opportunities in the area of inclusion, diversity and equity have been amazing and plentiful. When you love who you work with… Every day feels more fulfilling Every task seems more manageable And every goal appears more achievable. It’s not just about having fun, it’s about celebrating together. Celebrations bind us, reminding us that our efforts have meaning beyond the bottom line. They reinforce our connections and energize us to push forward, together. So, take a moment to look around at your team. These are the people who battle alongside you in the trenches, who share in your struggles, and who cheer on your victories. And remember, celebrating doesn’t require a fancy gala or big party. Small acknowledgments can have a big impact. A spontaneous lunch, a team shout-out in a meeting, or a simple thank-you note can uplift spirits and strengthen bonds. Do what works for you, but most importantly, remember: Celebrate every win, big or small.

Seleeta Watson is an Enablement Manager at Computacenter. She supports a large corporate financial institution as a Diversity Programme Consultant for their Supply Chain Diversity Programme and is a devoted advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion. Seleeta took home our Workplace Hero Award at our ceremony earlier this month. We recently caught up with her as part of our Past Winner Spotlight feature. Q: Who has inspired you the most? A: My grandmother. Her resilience, grace, determination and strength in the challenges that she had to overcome still leaves me in awe. Q: What’s your proudest achievement? A: My children. Q: Can you tell us something about your cultural heritage? A: I was raised Rastafarian in a very spiritual household. Q: What for you have been the most important moment for progress/quality? A: Although George Floyd’s passing was a tragedy it has brought about the kind of change that I didn’t think I’d ever witness during my career. Q: What message would you give to your younger self? A: Everyone else’s opinions should not be used as the compass that navigates your own and not everyone will like you and that is perfectly fine. Q: What gives you hope for the future? A: I have always felt that the IT industry is one of the best when it comes to accepting change and people who are diverse but if the last three years are anything to go by I am very excited for the future. #ethnicityawards #diversityandinclusion #progress #equality

“Zeitz has only helmed the ship at Harley-Davidson since 2020, but he made sure to sign the CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion pledge. This brings more than 2,500 CEOs together who have pledged to: Cultivate environments that support open dialogue on complex conversations around diversity, equity and inclusion. Implement and expand unconscious bias education and training. Share best-known diversity, equity and inclusion programs/initiatives, as well as those that have been unsuccessful. Engage boards of directors when developing and evaluating diversity, equity and inclusion strategies.” “Nearly three-quarters of executives surveyed by Bridge Partners’ Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Barometer cited the benefits of DEI on recruiting, hiring and retention (94%) and the reputational boost with the public (74%). The executives expect to build their DEI programs in the next 24 months while only 4% say they will cut back or eliminate them. They said the political climate has not had much impact on their DEI commitments, with 53% of executives saying it has had no impact and 47% saying it had a small impact, Bridge Partners found.”
