1984- a milestone year in the tech world. Here's a remarkable story from business history embodying resilience and vision. This is the story of Steve Jobs and the founding of NeXT, Inc. After experiencing an executive shakeup at Apple, Jobs was nothing short of devastated. He decided to take a leap of faith with five of his Apple colleagues and founded NeXT. The company was intended to develop high-end computer systems for education and scientific communities, hence bringing the novel concept of linking PCs and workstations to share data. In 1990, NeXT transitioned fully to software, which gave us NeXTSTEP. Despite the fact NeXT never truly took off as Jobs envisioned, its software advancements caught the eyes of Apple. Increasingly spiraling towards insolvency, Apple desperately needed a new operating system. Who else would they turn to but their prodigal son? In 1997, Apple purchased NeXT, paving the way for Steve Jobs’ epoch-making return. The software developed at NeXT became the foundation for MacOS, iOS, watchOS, and tvOS. Apple fired Steve Jobs. The company he built ended up sacked him Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple. But both of them had no business experience. So they decided to bring business people to solve this problem. One of them was John Sculley, ex-Pepsi CEO. He started clashing with Steve because sales of the Macintosh couldn't live up to the hype. Suddenly, they took this issue to the board which ended up firing Steve. The company he built, ended up firing him. But he didn't take it personally and started another company NeXT Inc.  This company also developed computers but their hardware wasn't as good. Although there software became quite famous. While NeXT was getting success, Apple started its downfall. Their market shares started losing their value. They appointed different CEOs but didn't get any results. So, in 1997 they brought NeXT to solve their software problems. Their CEO still couldn't tackle the downfall  board of directors decided to appoint Steve as CEO. When Steve took control, he took Apple to new heights with his brilliant ideas and leadership. ✅ Changed the whole music industry with the iPod ✅ Macintosh transformed the whole personal computing industry ✅ Revolutionized the smartphone market with the iPhone ✅ Started their Retail stores to increase brand loyalty ✅Created a new ecosystem for users with the launch of the App Store Your partner can leave you. Your best friend may hurt you. Your sibling may turn against you. Your parents can put hurdles in your way. Everything can turn against you. It's not about how hard you get hit. When Steve Jobs returned in 1997, he only had 90 days to save Apple from bankruptcy Here’s how he did it. Jobs ruthlessly cut Apple's product line, focusing on only a few core products starting with desktop and portable computers. By eliminating distractions, he allowed the company to concentrate on delivering exceptional experiences. Next, he boldly decided to forge a risky and unlikely alliance. He cut a deal with Microsoft to invest $150Mn in Apple, securing a much-needed cash infusion and ensuring compatibility between Apple and Windows. The Apple Ad. Look, it's not perfect. It can't be. Apple is a corporation that sells, has to show profit and has hungry (and not particularly nice) shareholders. But you think that shareholders give a shit about Kenyan grasslands? Or reduced water usage? Shareholders care about customers. And the segment of customer that Apple attracts cares about Kenyan grasslands and reduced water usage. So sure, it's not perfect. But now I want to see a report, independently verified (like Apple) on the other big tech companies - especially hardware companies.

The apple that overcame the phenomenon of sunk cost failure The sunk cost fallacy is the idea that people continue to invest in a project or effort even when it's clear that it won't succeed. This happens because they don't want to accept that their initial investments have already been lost. By continuing to invest, they hope to avoid feeling like they've failed, but this often leads to even bigger losses. A good example of handling such a situation well is Apple's decision to exit its electric car project, known as Project Titan. After investing ten years and billions of dollars, Apple recognized that the project was not going to succeed.
