If you have not yet, stop what you are doing and check out this insightful piece by Marsha Davis What Is the Courageous Giving Framework? The Courageous Giving Framework™ is a philanthropic strategy that donors and their advisors can employ to ensure they are working with social justice movements to build a just, multiracial democracy. It calls for funders to be as ruthlessly strategic as our opposition and shift from a defensive posture to an offensive one. https://lnkd.in/eeRhSbJh

In order to facilitate equitable systems change in the nonprofit sector, we have to consider who is leading most nonprofit organizations. According to recent data from Candid overall, 47% of nonprofit staff are white but 70% of nonprofit CEOs are white. This lack of diversity impacts so many aspects of how nonprofits support their staff and view the individuals they serve. Is the workplace environment safe for its staff and volunteers? Does the leadership participate in extractive relationships when "partnering" with smaller organizations and/or organizations led by people of color? Do they approach the communities they serve with a white savior complex, unconscious bias, and/or racist views? Do they recognize that most of the issues that the nonprofit sector solves are a result of racial inequities and systemic racism? There are so many more questions that we can ask about nonprofit leadership and how it can impact the work of the nonprofit sector. Thank you to Candid for releasing this report on the state of diversity in the US nonprofit sector https://lnkd.in/gStrccXW

Periodically, I ruffle feathers and bring this topic up. There are several underlying issues that contribute to this gross imbalance of representation in the nonprofit sector. If it were just the sector alone, it would be disturbing enough. But in THIS sector, where the images of the communities receiving outreach are so Black and brown, the stark contrast is striking (and alarming IMO). As I recently posted here on LinkedIn, there is a very diverse pool of professionals available to staff AND LEAD NPOs. The fact that they are NOT diversely staffed is a choice (whether that choice is made consciously or subconsciously is up for debate). No matter how many DEI sessions we include in conferences and meetings, this issue can not be resolved until we face the foundational mindsets that created the landscape.

It's time to be ruthlessly strategic in our philanthropic support of movements to build a just democracy. This political moment calls for a comprehensive philanthropic strategy that protects marginalized communities from physical and political attacks while building the economic, cultural, and political power we need to create a future where we all can thrive. I designed the Courageous Giving Framework to guide funding institutions and individual donors as they respond to the rise of fascism. Love and compassion, plus strategy and infrastructure, will build the world that we all deserve. #philanthropy #nonprofits #trustbasedphilanthropy #socialjusticephilanthropy https://lnkd.in/eERV-cBv

Is your nonprofit afraid of the "A" word? Make 2024 the year you change that and embrace advocacy. Many smaller nonprofit boards believe that advocacy and especially its subset - lobbying - are not something they should be involved in because of a belief that they aren't allowed to and / or that it is mission creep. The first part is an easy answer: nonprofit organizations can spend upwards of 16% of their budget on direct lobbying, as long as they aren't involved in anything electoral. The second part is a bit harder to answer, but here's why I think that everyone should be involved in some way. The National Council of Nonprofits has put out a great article on why advocacy matters: • It helps meet your mission • It helps lower barriers of access to services • It illuminates community need • It makes nonprofits more attractive to some funders • It gives communities a voice I'd also like to take a second to parallels I've seen in the private sector. When we think of corporate influence in politics, big companies like Coca-Cola, Chevron, Amazon, General Motors, and others. Yet, if you look closer, you'd be surprised by the number of "vanila" firms that have put out substantial amounts. To use one example, Grant Thornton LLP, an auditing firm, has donated tens of thousands of dollars through it's PAC over the past few years. Clearly, corporations of all types understand the importance of being at the political table. Nonprofit organizations should too (again though, not electorally). I'm sharing a good article on the subject from the NCN, but shout out to Larry Kaplan Jan Masaoka Rusty Stahl the Nonprofit Quarterly Blue Avocado Vu Le and others who have spoken or written about the subject. #nonprofit

“Nonprofits today are less aware of the advocacy and lobbying activities they are legally allowed to do compared to 20 years ago. … [N]onprofits can and should consider policy advocacy as one strategic approach to advancing their mission and values. As a first step, nonprofits and those who work with them should be more aware of their legal rights to engage in policy issues and nonpartisan voter engagement. We also encourage nonprofits to join collaborative groups and associations of nonprofits with similar interests, invest in DEI activities, and promote nonpartisan voter engagement. By doing so, nonprofits can increase their mission impact, promote equity, increase civic participation, contribute to democracy, and drive changes in their communities that align with their values.” The Retreat of Influence: Exploring the Decline of Nonprofit Advocacy and Public Engagement

Nonprofits face a lot of nuances when it comes to real and tangible community engagement, I appreciate that more study is being done around the efficacy of impact, so that organizational leaders may approach this challenge who a holistic understanding of what a nonprofit can reasonably accomplish. What struck me about this was how important democratic and equitable decision-making is; the kind that gets direct input from the community in question. #Nonprofit #Justice #Culture #Community

Nonprofits can significantly impact voter turnout by leveraging their missions for influence and advocacy. Currently, there's a gap between potential and action. 2022 saw a 10-point turnout jump among those engaged in nonprofits during midterms - particularly among younger demographics and voters of color. That's the impact nonprofits CAN have, but only 13% of nonprofits reported engaging voters. “The underlying motivation is really about promoting equity, about building a more inclusive electorate where all voices are heard. At the same time, voting has real-world consequences for communities and the nonprofits that live in them." - Brian Miller, Executive Director, Nonprofit VOTE (NV) #Nonprofits #VoterEngagement #VoterAdvocacy #Mobilization #Equity
