The cryptocurrency market is off to a roaring start in 2024, with Bitcoin surging above $45,000 for the first time in 21 months. The rally has been fueled by the anticipation of Bitcoin Spot ETF approval, which could come as early as this week. In contrast, US equities markets have taken a breather after reaching record highs in late December. The Nasdaq has dipped 2.5% from its recent peak, while the S&P 500 has held steady just 2% below its all-time high. Investors are now turning their attention to the upcoming release of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting today. The minutes will be closely scrutinised for any clues about the Fed's plans for interest rates. Market participants are hoping for confirmation of the Fed's dovish outlook and hints about the timing of expected interest rate cuts. This is an excerpt from the DKI March letter titled The “Store of Value” Debate #Bitcoin : This is a tough one. I own a lot of Bitcoin because it’s clear that the US government has made the decision to debase the dollar at an accelerating rate. Inflation is going to be more of an issue going forward than it’s been during the 40 years between 1980 and 2020. Even if inflation over the next few decades is “just” 5% - 10%, that loss of purchasing power compounds over time. Bitcoin is limited to just 21MM coins with an issuance schedule that gets cut in half every four years. As of April, Bitcoin will have a better stock to flow ratio than gold. Owning a deflationary asset during inflationary times seems like a great way to save and invest to me. Bitcoin is a new technology, and we’re all aware that its price in dollars has been volatile. DKI subscribers have seen their investments in Bitcoin rise between 300% - 400% since I recommended it in 2020. For people in countries with failing currencies (Argentina, Egypt, and many others), saving in Bitcoin has been the best way for them to preserve value. In their circumstances, Bitcoin has absolutely been a store of value. My take on it is that over time, Bitcoin will become a store of value. This will be more apparent as the largest industrialized economies like the US, the UK, the EU, and Japan all are running massive deficits and are debasing their fiat currencies. Bitcoin is a great solution to that. It’s going to take some more time, better education and understanding, and a decrease in volatility for Bitcoin to become a store of value. As of now, it’s an investment that I like. Uptober is here! The digital asset market had a corrective Q3 2023, in the midst of rapid global macroeconomic evolution. Looking ahead to Q4 2023, bullish themes are emerging across global macro, technical analysis and derivatives markets. Global Macro: Global inflation has cooled: Inflation rates have fallen in many major economies, including the US and the Eurozone. Central banks are shifting their stance: The US Federal Reserve last week paused its interest rate hikes. This is a positive development for digital assets, as rising interest rates/sovereign bond yields have been a major headwind for risk assets in recent months. Institutional adoption is growing: Several major financial institutions, such as BlackRock and Fidelity, last month announced new initiatives to offer exposure to digital assets via the form of spot ETFs in North America Technical: On-chain metrics are bullish: On-chain metrics, such as the Bitcoin Accumulation Trend Score (BATS) and the Net Unrealized Profit/Loss (NUPL) ratio, are both bullish. This suggests that market participants are accumulating Bitcoin and Ethereum at attractive prices. Altcoins are outperforming: Altcoins, or smaller market cap digital assets, have been outperforming Bitcoin and Ethereum in recent weeks. This suggests that there is a growing appetite for risk among market participants. Derivatives: Open interest and trading volume in derivatives markets are rising: Open interest and trading volume in derivatives markets, such as futures and options, are both rising. This is a sign of increased institutional participation and liquidity in the market. Funding rates are positive: Funding rates on perpetual futures contracts are positive. 📈WTF on Friday Markets, 06.10 Another dead cat bounce or start of legit rally? Macro sentiment is very bearish overall, and stock market players are selling off their bags in fear. The non-farm payroll employment numbers came out very strong today: 336k vs. the expected 170k. This means the labor market is very strong. So, the market is expecting further rate hikes, with the first cut expected in September 2024, not July as previously. Just six months ago, everyone thought the peak rates had passed, waiting for the pivot. Sentiment changes like a switch. Bitcoin is holding up well given the macro sentiment, which is not the case for altcoins.
