The progress in seagrass restoration science and success has to be one of the most critical breakthroughs I've seen for estuary habitat recovery in my 25 years in the industry. It wasn't so long ago that we weren't sure it could be done. But failure is success in progress. It's labour intensive to get it right and to scale it up, and I couldn't be prouder that OzFish has the people, tenacity and the tools to take up the challenge. We've had the fishing community successfully restoring seagrass in WA for the past 5 years. Our only challenge now is to continue to scale, across through SA, Vic, Tas and into Qld. World-wide, one of the biggest threats to many species of whales is vessel collisions, especially in high boat traffic areas. With whale season being underway here in Maui, we want to encourage boat operators to follow the recommended guidelines created collaboratively with the Hawaiian Island Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, DLNR-Division of Aquatic Resources, DNLR-Division of boating and Ocean Recreation, the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council, tour boat operators, and Pacific Whale Foundation. These recommendations include: - Maintaining a speed limit of 15 knots or less, or minimal planing speed, within water 100 fathoms (600 ft) deep or less - Reducing vessel speed to six knots when within 400 yards when approaching and departing whales - Posting a designated observer/lookout while underway - Paying close attention to the time of day and time of year These recommendations alongside official regulations hope to decrease collision and disturbance rates with humpback whales in Hawaiʻi.
