As humans continue to emit #CO2 into the atmosphere, warming the planet and causing #climatechange, the #US and many other #countries around the #world are making #commitments to reduce their #carbonfootprint. Buildings and the construction #sector account for about 39% of #energyrelated global CO2 #emissions annually, positioning the built environment as a major focus of #decarbonization efforts. For this reason, the U.S. Federal Sustainability Plan set forth an ambitious goal to achieve net-zero emissions buildings by 2045. "Climatologically, we are running out of time. We can no longer continue to build the way we have always done," said Volker Sick, Director of the Global CO2 Initiative and the DTE Energy Professor of Advanced Energy Research at the University of Michigan and contributing author on the study. The #multidisciplinary team emphasized that we need to think carefully about construction now as infrastructure lifespans are often 50 to 100 years long. Prototype “electric cement” made from recycled concrete and electric furnaces to recycle steel. This would dramatically reduce carbon pollution in construction. Construction industry. Are you aware +90% of everything you are building right now will eventually end up in the landfill? The industry is still fixated on tear out/down logic and has no sign of changing this. I have been pointing out the ethos of 50yr lifecycle on homes is ridiculous if you consider the reference to destination. You'll be dead, so what does it matter? Is the future generation simply left to deal with the lack of initiative and progress on these matters? Mathsmithing carbon numbers for a feelgood gold star rating isn't actually doing a damn thing. Procure for low carbon construction and provide incentives in our contracts 2. Set phase out dates for fossil fuel use 3. Eliminate the most carbon intensive concrete products 4. Eliminate the most carbon intensive steel products 5. Adopt PAS 2080, Carbon Management in Infrastructure, as a common standard 🌎 Our Executive Director Andy Murray commented: “ConstructZero is a great industry initiative aligned to the recommendations from our own Net Zero Position Paper that we launched alongside COP26.
