What will you do when the tap runs dry?*
We here in the West often hear terms such as “water scarcity” and “access to sanitary facilities” without really listening – I mean for us everything is so easy whether we need to get a glass of water to drink or to go to the toilet, and as a result we have become quite blasé.
Oh yes, we have all heard of the SDGs, COP28, and UN predictions but as long as I can take my morning shower then my world is in order.
And whilst the UN predicts that nearly two-thirds of the planet’s population will face water scarcity by 2050… we still quietly think to ourselves that is a long way away right?
A little more than 25 years to be exact.
But for some context, I imagine many of you reading this can remember the start of the new millennium. And I am sure many of you still remember where you were on New Year’s Eve 1999.
Doesn’t seem so long ago, does it?
Now let me tell you something …
…Everyone is also going to remember where they were the day the taps run dry!*
Some of you may have even got into the new trend of “prepping” – the world is a very uncertain place right now – and will appreciate that top of your list to survival is having a good source of water and the means to keep it clean – but this is a fight many millions are going through every day.
Ahhh that is just a doomsday scenario, isn’t it? For us probably yes, for millions less fortunate - a daily occurrence.
What can be done?
There is no rocket science involved here, we simply have to look after our freshwater resources more carefully, and that starts by putting back into nature the water we have taken out to use in a clean state.
As a first step that means building new sewage treatment plants to restore the natural water balance in countries where it is most needed – and that is the Dutch Clean Tech mission in a nutshell.
