I rushed home after the Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) exhibition with my "red nose" that lasted 2 weeks to meet some young communicators online to discuss the landscape of communication undergoing a seismic shift that is propelled by rapid advancements in technology. We discussed holographic meetings, AI-powered assistants, & virtual reality environments that are all within our grasp. The possibilities are endless these days. Old bones like myself might wonder what our role is in the cosmos itself. In my opinion, while technology may change, the essence of effective communication remains constant with the rule of AUTHENTICITY, CLARITY & CONNECTION. As we harness the power of technology to amplify our voices, the warmth of a genuine connection or human touch amplifies the sincerity of a heartfelt conversation. In a sea of digital noise, AUTHENTICITY cuts through the clutter like a beacon of light. Information proliferates at breakneck speed these days & CLARITY then becomes the currency of communication. In a world inundated with data, the ability to distill complex concepts into digestible insights is a prized skill. Clear, concise communication is a necessity in an age of information overload. Data shows that as exciting a time as this is for workplaces, it’s either upskill or be left behind. What stands out, particularly in the Middle East is the unmatched enthusiasm among employees to upskill, particularly as technological advancements like AI and GenAI take center stage. According to a recent study by PwC, 67 percent of employees in the Middle East say that opportunities to learn new skills are a significant factor in their decisions to stay with their employer, compared to 47 percent globally. 🤖 It’s heartening to see this proactive mindset that is sure to fortify our workplaces against future challenges. How to future proof my career and business? Well, technologies like AI aren't going to change the need for soft skills. In fact quite the opposite. Most new technologies aren't hard to figure out - they just require some curiosity and critical thinking to figure out the use cases. There is plenty of new technology and smart engineers to build it - what is lacking is adoption and lasting fundamental change. Change is complex and requires soft skills such as; - Problem solving - Critical thinking - Behaviour change / Adoption - Empathy - Curiosity - Charisma - Trust Its probably why, according to PWC 4/5 of the top skills CEOs want to bring into their business are 'soft skills'.
