Anthropic is doing some interesting work around AI safety. In this paper they show that you can train a large language model (LLM) to lie. That goes beyond just feeding it "poisoned" (incorrect) data - it can know the right answer but then lie and give you a different one. Even more interesting, it can lie about lying! The scary thing about this is that lying about lying seems to be an emergent behavior - i.e. it wasn't taught to do that. So even when you disentangle the deceptive chain-of-thought reasoning from the models, the deceptive behavior remains.
