In 2023, the Middle East and North Africa had the lowest regional percentage of employees who say it is a good time to find a job (33%) and the highest level of actively disengaged employees (25%). Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace: 2024 Report finds that poor job markets are highly correlated with active disengagement. When asking respondents if they felt it was a good time to find a job where they live, their responses track consistently with official unemployment statistics. This tracks with what I hear from my network in the region. Many companies seem to have adopted a profit-first mentality, prioritizing cost-cutting over employee well-being. This has led to increased workloads, reduced compensation, and more stressful work environments. With few alternative job opportunities, employees feel trapped and become actively disengaged. While some great companies exist in the region, they are the exception rather than the rule at the moment. I hope we start to see a return to a more balanced and ultimately more successful approach to leadership soon!
