SA gets enough solar and wind to be 100% renewably powered outh Australia has secured federal funding to back solar PV and wind projects and become 100 percent renewably powered before 2030. This would be a historic development, as so far only hydro power based jurisdictions have been able to achieve 100 percent renewable power. The state signed a final Renewable Energy Transformation Agreement to ensure the delivery of enough new renewable energy infrastructure to power every household in Adelaide, in return for dedicated federal funding support. Canberra will underwrite developers to build a minimum 1000MW of new wind and solar projects in South Australia, enough to power all households across Adelaide. Exciting developments from Neoen, as the company secures final approval from New South Wales regulators to proceed with the construction of a 192MW wind farm. This project is a crucial component of a large-scale hybrid renewable energy hub planned for the Australian state. As reported by Veselina Petrova for Renewables Now Ltd, the green light for the Thunderbolt Wind Farm was granted by the state's Independent Planning Commission after careful consideration, following objections that led to a referral from the state government planning department. With conditions outlined in the final permit, including specifications regarding turbine height, landscape preservation, and road enhancements, Neoen is poised to commence construction ~47km northeast of Tamworth, in the New England region of New South Wales. Once operational, the Thunderbolt Wind Farm is expected to feature up to 32 turbines and generate an impressive 570,000 MWh of electricity annually. This AUD-373-million project represents the initial phase of a broader initiative aimed at establishing a comprehensive renewable energy ecosystem within the New England Renewable Energy Zone. A setback for New York's Offshore Wind Industry: The cancellation of 3 major projects (estimated to provide roughly 4 gigawatts of renewable energy) was announced today. This development represents a significant challenge in meeting New York's ambitious renewable energy goals and highlights the complexities of the energy transition. Some key points: - All three projects had planned to utilize General Electric's new 18-megawatt turbine, which the manufacturer has since canceled. - As a result, project developers would now have to deploy more, smaller turbines, driving up costs beyond the point of financial viability. -The cancellations also impact associated manufacturing facilities that were expected to support these projects, casting doubt on the creation of anticipated jobs in the state. How long until Offaly overtakes all of these counties as Irelands largest Renewable Energy county? Maybe 2024 will be the year with the following projects under construction in the county and entering operation: - Derrinlough WF 126 MW - Yellow River WF 101 MW - Moanvane WF 57 MW - Cushaling WF 56 MW - 155 MWhr co-located BESS at Cushaling/Cloncreen WF That presents close to 1 TWHr of new renewable energy to the system from a single county. Who would have thought that 10-15 years ago when we had multiple peat producing stations and emissions in the millions of tonnes/annum. That is the leadership that is needed at local level and embracing renewable energy presents other opportunities beyond the obvious climate rationale - Jobs, Rates, Infrastructure for new industrial development as evidenced by our recent Eco Energy Park announcement's. The Albanese government has announced Australia's "largest-ever" tender for renewable energy projects. The 6GW tender opens in May 2024 and will include at least 2.2GW of renewable energy to New South Wales, and 300MW to South Australia subject to agreement between federal and state governments. The tender is part of an ambitious 32GW plan announced in November 2023 to promote renewables through federal underwriting and achieve Australia's 82% renewable energy target by 2030. It offers long-term agreements to selected projects with set minimum and maximum revenue levels to secure investor returns.

The article also highlighted that building out the #energygrid is critical and a lot of focus had shifted to this issue along with a shift to investment in #storage. #Batteries had an “enormous” year, with $4.9 billion of new projects committed, easily more than double 2022’s level. It is expected that we will see the #investment dollars oscillate between the various components of a #resilient and stable grid. This means balancing investment distribution across generation, storage, and transmission. No need to sensationalise the impact of arbitrary lines drawn based on a calendar year. Solar plus 45 minutes of storage can power exactly NO HOMES 24/7/365. Adding insignificant amounts of electricity storage to intermittent resources is just another way to smokescreen the high cost and low value of wind and solar as a complete replacement for the dispatchable fleet of nuclear, coal and natural gas fueled power plants our nation’s economy and quality of life are built upon. The necessary quantity of storage to allow solar to replace the dispatchable fleet is (generously) 72 hours of storage, increasing project cost by more than an order of magnitude and indicating a more than 100 times greater ratio of storage to generation than this project offers. Don’t be fooled, ERCOT. I know that you have the proper tools to run system adequacy modeling. Please treat your captive customer region fairly by using them properly.
