Reading the election brochures of 2 candidates for the AU Commission Chairperson position (Kenya’s Raila Odinga and Djibouti’s Mahamoud Ali Youssouf), it was striking to see that only one candidate articulated his vision of Africa in the world (Djibouti) with a focus on representation in international institutions. But no document articulated the public vision of the candidates regarding the role of the Chairperson in facilitating collaboration between member states, the AU chair and the AU Commission to make the best of the gain that the G20 seat ALREADY is. In fact there is not even a reference to the G20 seat. This is an area where the Chairperson has a mandate through a Summit Decision… We have the full right to ask for more representation. Having the vision to translate gains into benefit is what will make a difference.

This week, presidents Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and Paul Kagame of Rwanda participated in the #specialmeeting24 on Global Collaboration, Growth, and Energy for Development in Riyadh. Their participation coincides with the development of economic ties between Africa and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. This evolving economic partnership holds immense potential for both regions, promising significant advancements in diversification, investment and sustainable development. The fact that companies in the GCC have already pledged $53 billion in investments in Africa, earmarked for critical projects addressing food security, the energy transition, and infrastructure development, is a testament to this potential. While Africa welcomes and appreciates this investment, the presidents were unequivocal in their message at the #specialmeeting24: Africa is open for business, but equity, inclusivity and collaboration must be at the heart of every transaction. Here's my round-up of their key messages. And for more on what leaders were talking about at the #specialmeeting24, read more from Gayle Markovitz here: https://wef.ch/4duNse6
