The second "Building the Future Think Tank" regional roundtable for 2024 was held in Newcastle last month. 💭🌎 Our very own Nik Turner, Executive Director of Communities and Customer Services at believe housing, joined industry experts coming together to brainstorm ways to push forward retrofit in the North-east. The panel agreed that skills and in particular green skills were a key area that needed addressing in order to propel the sustainability and retrofit programmes. Nik highlighted the power of collaboration, she said, "We have seen the ability for industry to pull together on these things, and it can be a real strength. But we need a collaborative approach.” 🤝 Developing and nurturing skills, retrofit funding, and public participation were just a few of the focuses of the conversation. We just achieved a big win for creating a more sustainable future in NYC! The City has secured $19.9 Million (!!) in federal funding to help with the implementation of Local Law 97 (NYC’s nation-leading program to drastically curtail climate-change causing carbon emissions from the city’s largest buildings). Courtesy the U.S. Department of Energy, funding will be used in partnership with the New York University Marron Institute of Urban Management (NYU Marron) and Urban Green Council (UGC) to fund the following projects in support of Local Law 97: ⚪ Increase outreach and educational guidance to residential multifamily property owners in state-designated disadvantaged communities (DACs), including scaling up existing public training programs; ⚪ Promote workforce training and development in the green technology sector to generate a larger pool of sustainability professionals for retrofit projects; ⚪ Develop automated audit tools to help building owners better understand how to achieve compliance with the law; ⚪ Create a new citywide database to document progress toward decarbonization; ⚪ Expand publicly-available visualization mapping tools that help the public understand the emissions reduction and energy efficiency work being accomplished in New York City to fight climate change; ⚪ Increase staffing in the DOB’s Sustainability Bureau to assist in building outreach and enforcement. New York City is one of just 19 jurisdictions in the country that DOE’s Office of State and Community Energy Programs (SCEP) selected for this round of funding—bestowing the most money of any single city to NYC. Funded by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) passed by the Biden-Harris Administration in 2022, these grants are aimed at helping local governments implement the latest energy efficient and innovative building codes to improve resiliency and sustainability nationwide. Last month in Newcastle, our very own Environmental Manager, Asimina (Mina) Cole, joined industry experts to brainstorm innovative ways to advance retrofit initiatives in the North East. 🧠💥 The consensus? The work being done in the retrofit space is crucial for our region, especially given the impacts of climate change and the unique characteristics of our housing stock. Key discussions focused on funding, skill development, and the necessity for ongoing collaboration between government and industry. We emphasised that long-term strategies are essential—short-term, stop-start measures won't suffice. This is literally how decarbonization gets done — building by building. To reach zero emission goals, this process is unavoidable. There are options on policy and other measures to complement the effort but every community has to have people go in, take out the fossil fuel systems and replace with electric based systems. Renewable supply has to provide the electricity, but without electrification renewable supply doesn’t help by itself. Of course other sources es have to be addressed too, but buildings are essential. So every community needs to think about doing Ithaca.

NPR did an INCREDIBLE deep dive into the City of Ithaca’s plan to electrify ALL buildings in the city by 2030! As you might imagine, it’s not easy getting this kind of program off the ground. A journey of 1000 miles begins w a few footsteps. Rebecca Evans is providing fantastic and patient leadership. One of the secrets that the BlocPower team learned when working with several thousand families to green their Brooklyn homes in 2016 and 2017: green buildings marketing can go viral, and not just grow linearly. It’s not easy to electrify and green a building. In fact, it is incredibly difficult, with 10,000 ways to screw up each project. But every single electric building retrofit is a triumph. That building owner, triumphant, shares the good news w their neighbors, at their synagogue or mosque or temple, w parents in their PTA, with other business leaders. BlocPower made it happen in Brooklyn, and we are proud to partner w Ithaca, and Atlanta, and LA, and Chicago to continue to make progress.
