Somewhat “combative pacifist and cooperative anarchist.” I fight extremism by engaging the private sector.
Remember that campy poster “All I needed to know I learned in Kindergarten”…well “All I needed to know I learned in Orchestra.” I play cello in the American University symphony orchestra that just wrapped up the spring semester. It gives me – and should give us all hope that Gen Z students still learn to play oboe, French horn, harp, viola and so much more (and are composers, too) – and that they are smart, cynical and committed. Here’s what I learned – with credit to students, faculty and colleagues for the insights: 🚩 #1 Don’t die a hero – there’s really no need, since it’s about the ensemble and your section’s performance; it is not meant to be a solo. 🎶 #2 When in doubt, leave it out – refer to #1, don’t try to make your point but get it wrong – same goes for music notes. 🚣♂️ #3 Take it as it comes – having a plan for bowings is good, sometimes just see what happens; good guidance for life, too. ✏ #4 Always bring a pencil – we’re all figuring it out together (in rehearsal) and adapting as we go. When sharing a music stand, it’s an honor to turn the page or have the page turned for you; it’s an honor to spend the time together with a group playing a piece that will not ever be played the same way again and to spend those moments together focusing on a singular goal to play the piece to the best of everyone’s ability. Orchestra is the ultimate team effort – that’s really my point. And if you have a colleague who plays in an orchestra/chorus/band, etc - they may be particularly great to work with!

Helping ambitious leaders transform from exhausted ➡️ EMPOWERED - because you’re “done” with feeling overworked & undervalued! 🫱🏻🫲🏼 Social Entrepreneur | Mindset Mentor | RAF Veteran | UN SDG advocate 🌍
🎻 This weekend, a wonderful friend of mine took me to see the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra for my birthday. 🎶 The place was packed, the music incredible (scores from famous films including Jurassic Park, ET and Star Wars) and the atmosphere fantastic! 👏🏻 It was wonderful the way in which the conductor praised and highlighted the work of certain musicians, and then asking them to stand to get their own recognition. He was a clear leader, taking feedback from his orchestra members and clearly had good rapport, which was evident when he disappeared for a moment, only to come back out through another door in a brown cape with a blue lightsaber in hand…I did wonder if he’d use it to conduct for the last set 🤔 🥁 One thing that I found interesting though, was the roles of “lead violin” with her back to the majority of her ‘team’ and spoke not a word to them, or even made eye contact with anyone other than the conductor for the entire performance, vs “lead percussionist” who was quite clearly interacting, motivating and corralling the other percussionists the whole way through. It struck me that, not only are there different types of leadership, depending on environment, set up and situation, but the importance of role-modelling too. 💭 In all my years of music at school, up to a rather painful grade B at GCSE, it had never occurred to me that the lead violinist would sit anywhere else, or be facing anyone other than the conductor…. 🧐 So my question to you is: are musicians missing a trick here, is there more to leadership than meets the eye (probably) or is it one of those things that “has always been done that way” and no one has ever thought to do differently? #leadershipmindset #growthmindset #professionallycurious #leadershiplessons #leadershipdevelopment

ASK A CIM STUDENT | If you didn't play the instrument you do now, what instrument would you play? Jonas Aumiller (Babayan) has the answer: "Not exactly an instrument, but I hope this still counts: If I didn‘t play the piano I would have loved to go into conducting! I have always been fascinated by the orchestra and its literature, and I like the idea of a conductor leading a group of musicians to give their best, both individually and as an ensemble."
