In today's FrostNews, we're excited to highlight Roy McLerran, a D.M.A. student in wind conducting, who is an experienced music educator and ensemble director. A few of his recent accomplishments showcase his remarkable talent and leadership in the field, including guiding a group of Frost Bands students on a ten-day trip to Austria for performances, study, and cultural exploration, which he organized and fundraised for. His music was marked by pioneering harmony and counterpoint, profoundly influencing the transition from the modal system to the tonal system. Dufay's compositions, diverse and prolific, continue to resonate through the ages, influencing later composers like Josquin des Prez. As we journey through time, the melodies of the Burgundian School remain a reminder of the Renaissance's artistic and cultural blossoming. Today at ArtRKL we officially inaugurated Bad Bunny's Puerto Rican Cultural Empire series. In PART I, I explored with Felipe Buitrago and Ana Canepa how Bad Bunny created a Puerto Rican cultural empire that's a disruption in the United States's cultural economy with his music and art in Spanish that come from the streets of Latin America. We dove deep in understanding Bad Bunny's role in the orange economy (cultural and creative economy), how he's producing contemporary music and art, and the role that Spanish plays in his work. "If you go 20 years back, the debate in music was: will Latin America at some point have great movements on a global scale? Some said [it would happen] if we only made Latin American rock. And no. Rock did not take us to the world,” Buitrago said. “Reggaeton took us [there] because it’s a different expression that has elements of rock. It has other elements, but deep down, it’s more autochthonous because it’s a purer expression of identity. More popular. More from the base. Ambition backfires without resilience. Case in point: Robert Schumann. Schumann was a virtuoso pianist of the Romantic period. Obsessed with wanting to push the limits of his abilities on the piano, he invented a contraption to stretch his maximum handspan. 🖐 For Schumann, wider handspan = more possibilities. More possibilities = greatness. 🏔 The maths seemed to check out. … until it didn’t. He partially paralysed his index finger, causing irreparable damage. 😱 He was never able to play the piano how he wanted to again. But that’s not the full story here. In a rut, it’s easy to imagine Schumann finishing his musical career there. He didn’t. Instead, Schumann doubled down on composing, writing music that surpassed his performing career and later formed his most significant legacy to classical music. We’ve all heard it before: ‘When one door closes, another opens.’ But the real test is finding the courage to step through it. To see the potential in yourself. This week on #MorningMika, I have a very special treat for you: My husband, Joe Scarborough, the host of Morning Joe, is a musician, but you may not know his background. Joe grew up in church communities in the Deep South. His mother had a master’s in music and worked as a music director and organist at churches while Joe was growing up. She taught him piano in between his church choir practices and Bible studies. He always loved writing rock songs, but it was gospel music from both white and Black churches that came most naturally to him as a writer. He’s private about his music, but when I heard a song he recorded this summer called "No Guarantees," I encouraged him to record and share the song about the importance of standing up and doing what’s needed to save democracy. Inspired by a Richard Cohen Washington Post column from 20 years ago that described the peaceful life of Jews at a German summer camp the year before the Holocaust began, Joe wrote "No Guarantees" as both a warning and a song of hope. I wanted you to hear it.
