I never really understood how the multiplayer games are distributed systems before. This is an excellent series from Gabriel about having a fast paced multiplier system over a non-instantaneous network, mainly about the techniques to employ, in order to present a reasonable and enjoyable experience to the players. Striking a good balance between strongly consistent authorative server and p2p clients, is a delightful tradeoff problem as it gets. When launching your multiplayer game, it's crucial to have a backup plan. One way to avoid problems is to look at what’s critical and see whether you can bake in some redundancy. For example, with Chivalry 2, we had multiple server providers ready and waiting in each location. If one provider went down (or simply filled up), we could easily switch to another. The grassroots explosion of Helldivers 2 should have AAA publishers paying attention: gamers still want games where the actual fun isn't buried behind registration screens and onerous onboarding experiences that do little beyond train you how to be monetized... all after you've already spent $70. Gamers are willing to spend obscene amounts of money if your game is fun - you need to show it to them. I'm a bit worried about the Linsanity potential of this game given the server problems, obsolete engine and lurking comments about thin endgame content. But this game surely has already exceeded Arrowhead's wildest financial forecasts before even releasing on Xbox, and the developer interaction with the community has cultivated a fanbase rooting for this game's success. It’s also filled with little moments that add up to one special experience. One example of Helldivers 2’s attention to detail is in its emotes. There are plenty of two-person emotes that emphasize the cooperative experience, including one that lets you play Rock, Paper, Scissors. The Rock, Paper, Scissors emote is available as part of the Warbonds acquisitions menu, which is basically a battle pass. This particular emote is on page eight, and you’ve got to unlock a ton of stuff to reach it. It costs 50 medals once you get there, but you’ve got to spend hundreds to get that far. Helldivers 2 lets you earn medals by completing missions, so get to it. Soooo.... #HellDivers2 has an awesome fully functional "rock, paper, scissors" mini game where you input commands for selections!
