Honoring Our Protectors: Celebrating National Police Week 2024 🚓 This week, we honor the brave men and women who dedicate their lives to keeping our communities safe – our police officers. National Police Week (May 12th – 18th, 2024) is a time to recognize their commitment, sacrifice, and unwavering service. Why are police officers vital? - Maintaining Law and Order: They respond to emergencies, investigate crimes, and ensure public safety through their proactive presence. - Building Trust and Community Relations: Good police work builds bridges between law enforcement and the communities they serve. - Selfless Service: Officers put their lives on the line every day to protect us, often facing challenging and dangerous situations. Let's show our appreciation for our police force: - Express gratitude to an officer you know. A simple "thank you" can go a long way in showing your appreciation. - Support community policing initiatives. Programs that foster positive interactions between police and residents benefit everyone. - Advocate for fair and just policing practices. A strong police force requires a commitment to community trust and accountability. #NationalPoliceWeek #ThankAPoliceOfficer #LawEnforcement

It wouldn't be a stretch to say that virtually every report calling for police reform today cites the need to implement community policing. But what does that mean? It's more than simply involving the broader public in discussions about policing tactics. Much more. It’s about a fundamental shift in the way we view policing. My latest analysis for Policing Insight, 'Progress or Pretence? A Decade of Policing Evolution Across Continents,' asks this question, and more like it. What an inspiring day filled with insights and reflections on race and equality in policing! 🚔✨ We delved into the barriers faced by Black, Asian, and Mixed Heritage officers and staff, and how we can start to reclaim our narrative. 📖 The importance of diversity of thought to enhance any organisation was clear, especially for policing—where every perspective matters. 🤝 Feeling safe within policing is the first step toward feeling a true sense of belonging. 🛡️ If we want to tackle racism effectively, we need to ‘turn off the tap’ before we can clean up the mess—it’s time to address the root cause. 🚰 It was great to see optimism about change! 🙌. A consideration to shifting from four pillars, Shaun White We discussed focusing on two key pillars: ‘Disproportionality’ and ‘Community Engagement’. The message was clear: don’t embark on this journey alone. There’s ‘strength in numbers’, and having supportive teammates makes all the difference. 💪👥 One thought that stood out—let’s shift from ‘allyship’ to sponsorship, championing each other’s growth and progress. It’s not about a revolution but rather an ‘evolution’, where everyone plays a part in the solution. 🌱 People in positions of power have the opportunity to ‘flip the switch’ and drive change quickly. 🔄 Let’s be brave, take that leap of faith, and start shaping the future—just like in agile project management, what we set out to achieve might change as we progress, and that’s okay. 🚀 Colin B. Trust and confidence in the police are crucial for effective law enforcement and maintaining public order, but in recent years, there have been significant declines in public trust in both the U.S. and U.K. Strategies such as enhancing procedural justice in police interactions, adopting community policing approaches, and reforming police culture from a "warrior" to a "guardian" mindset are essential for rebuilding trust and confidence between police forces and the communities they serve. DeAno & Scarry - the law firm for law enforcement 🔹 civil rights attorney 🔹 employment lawyer 🔹 critical incident advisor 🔹 trainer
Last week, nearly one year following the death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of members of the Memphis Police Department's SCORPION unit, the DOJ released a guide for state and local police agencies to consider in developing & maintaining "specialized police units." This is the result of the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) and the National Policing Institute (NPI) convening "a series of meetings in 2023 to discuss specialized units in state, local, tribal and territorial law enforcement agencies and create guidance for those agencies' leadership to consider when forming, managing, and disbanding such units. It includes sections on identifying the need for a specialized unit; selecting the unit's membership and leadership; managing the unit; establishing its policies, procedures, and end date; holding the unit and its members accountable; and working with the community when they have feed on the specialized unit's operations." I'm still reading/digesting the 72-page report (the link to the report is posted in the comments below). I'm curious to hear from current/former managers and supervisors of such specialized units with their views of the report. In my opinion, appropriate supervision and accountability of these units is the key to the units' success. Many negative high-profile incidents involving these units have demonstrated time and again that proper supervision was non-existent or lacking. #lawenforcement #police #policeofficers #deputy #taskforce #policetraining
