Cancer recently emerged as the top healthcare cost for employers. As employers look to manage this growing healthcare threat, many may consider adding a new point solution. Some employers are already offering an integrated solution that offers employees the cancer support they need. During a recent From Day One webinar titled “Overcoming Cancer Challenges: Is Your Existing Solution the Answer?” team members from Accolade, Inc. discussed how a personalized approach to healthcare can offer cancer prevention and support that improves care, cost, and outcomes. Thank you to speakers April Ries, Erin Hirshorn, and moderator Morgan McHugh. #FD1Conference #FD1Sponsor #FD1Editorial

The path to implementing comprehensive cancer screening is often fraught with challenges. Common objections like "I don't have time," "I already have too much to do," or "I don't know where to start" can hinder healthcare providers from taking proactive steps. However, digital health tools can address these concerns by streamlining the screening process, offering clinical decision support, and providing educational resources that make starting easier and more efficient. Cancer risk assessment and precision prevention are particularly crucial when considering hereditary cancers, which show themselves through personal and family histories of cancer. The excuses against screening - from doubts about clinical benefit to feelings of unpreparedness in facing potential hereditary risks - must be countered with robust digital strategies that facilitate early detection and intervention. #precisionprevention #aheadofcancer Read more ⬇️

The White House proclaimed May, 2024 "Inaugural National Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Month" as part of #BidensCancerMoonshot. So, let's talk about #mammograms. They’re the best chance we have for early detection of #breastcancer? Yes. 👚Each year 1 in 8 women will receive a breast cancer diagnosis. That's an increase over the last decade from 1 in 10 women with younger women being diagnosed more frequently. Cancer death rates declined 40% from 1989 to 2016 among women. The progress is attributed to improvements in early detection. Source: American Cancer Society Last year, I was one of eight. I'm a poster child for early detection through routine mammogram. Like so many others, I never had a single symptom and no family history. There's no doubt that early detection, early intervention, and rapidly advancing protocols ensure women like me will experience outcomes that were unthinkable 20 years ago. Not a week goes by that I don't hear of two more women newly diagnosed. They’re your sisters, friends, coworkers, college roommates … and if they’re lucky, like me, they’re not remotely checked out and using every ounce of life to leave the world better than we found it. I'll have more to share on the intersection of #healthequity, #foodasmedicine, and technology supporting these efforts over the next few months. Am I worried about sharing a personal update like this, here, on LinkedIn? No -- I'm grateful for the #research #funding #innovation that enables me to use my experience to ensure we don't let someone unnecessarily fall through the cracks. Improving #earlydetection is critical to ending cancer as we know it, a priority of President Biden’s Unity Agenda – a call for solving big challenges that unite all Americans. Earlier cancer diagnosis, including through increased #publicawareness and access to #cancerscreenings, can improve health outcomes and reduce the cost of cancer care by billions of dollars each year. Last, I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge friendships fostered over decades on LinkedIn and other socials for rushing in with love, support, DoorDash, off-color humor, and inspiration. I AM SO VERY LUCKY! #AllHailScience #FCancer

Grateful for partners like Transcarent and Intermountain Health for aligning with missions of connecting high quality care, living the healthiest lives possible, and detecting cancer early, when it can be cured. Yesterday's webinar hosted by Transcarent, featuring Intermountain Health and GRAIL, did an excellent job to spotlight why it's crucial to provide a proactive and holistic approach to cancer care. Later detection doesn’t only impact employees' outcomes and cost of care, but also puts serious strains on their employers’ abilities to cover the costs of more intensive treatment. Doing nothing and hoping for a different outcome is the same as accepting the current narrative. It's unsustainable given what we know about the rising costs and instances of cancer. What can you do? - Incentivize employees with valuable, motivating incentives to complete existing screening tests, such as enticing monetary amounts. The fact is current screening modalities like mammograms and colonoscopies save lives and are NEEDED to prevent high cost and late-stage disease. - Add multi-cancer testing to your elevated-risk population, such as those aged 50+, to increase total potential cancers screened from 4-5 to over 50 including aggressive cancers like pancreatic, ovarian, liver, lung, esophageal, and many more - Streamline plan benefits by eliminating point solutions with low use or that are less impactful than multi-cancer testing - Proudly tell your employees and the world that your company is taking a big step forward in the battle against cancer! Ask yourself: How would YOU react if your company pro-actively added a cutting-edge benefit to help prevent physically and financially costly late-stage cancers? https://lnkd.in/gkBbybdq

This month, we spotlight an essential message: Men, it's time to take charge of your health! Recent findings from the Prevent Cancer Foundation highlight a pressing issue: Over 20% of men aren’t scheduling their own doctor’s appointments. According to our annual Early Detection Survey, nearly 1 in 5 men rely on relatives or partners to manage their healthcare appointments. This trend is concerning. Men in the U.S. are missing out on crucial opportunities to prevent cancer or detect it early. With cancers like colorectal, melanoma (skin), and oral cancers being prevalent among men—and routine screenings available—we must empower men to prioritize their health. There is a lot to unpack in this article, "Substantial Disparities In Cancer Care Associated With Patients’ Income Levels" https://lnkd.in/gJGJDGSQ Gross disparities in healthcare exist. And they are striking. Quality, accessible health care is NOT available to all individuals in the US and the disparities in access to quality care can be attributed to racism, ageism, sexism, socioeconomic status, and a variety of other isms and intersectionalities that create disgusting differences in survival outcomes and quality of life. Full Stop. But one of the lines in the article that caught my eye was, "low income was one of several key factors associated with less use of immunotherapy." Immunotherapy use may not be the best guidepost to judge cancer care disparities. Immunotherapy is an incredible advancement in the treatment of cancer and, if immunotherapy is warranted, it absolutely should be offered and made accessible. HOWEVER, immunotherapies are also grossly overused in the US and not without consequence. We need to be measuring our ability to close the access to quality care gap by examining elements of care that SHOULD be available to all - like quality screening, timely approval of treatments, comprehensive biomarker testing, and supportive care therapies, not by subtly perpetuating a societal myth that immunotherapy is a cancer cure all. #CancerCare #HealthEquity #HealthDisparities Sanford Jeames Barbara Segarra-Vazquez Grace Cordovano, PhD, BCPA Abigail Johnston Roberta A Albany Valencia Robinson Janice Cowden Kelly Shanahan Jill Feldman Eugene Manley, Jr., PhD Gitte Henssel Joergensen Beverly A.
