Private Equity funds are able to buy investments at big discounts to the official values set by the private-equity funds’ managers. In many cases, buyers quickly mark up the stakes they acquire to the official value, no matter how little they paid for them. Very difficult to see how big the immediate markup is—unless the buyer acquired the stake on the last business day of the quarter and disclosed it later in a public filing. The investment funds that mark up their acquisitions benefit from instant gains, which increase assets and boost fees. Strong performance numbers then attract new investors. As the article notes, the net asset value's reported by private-equity funds have been long questioned because of their lack of volatility.

What an interesting, dizzying time it is for infrastructure at the moment. With BlackRock's $12.5bn acquisition of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), with General Atlantic's acquisition of Actis in play... and then Macquarie Group, who've just raised an impressive €8bn for its latest European infrastructure fund - and still, infrastructure remains "an emerging asset class" with a "wide gap between what's planned and what's needed" according to Macquarie's Adam Lygoe. Aztec remains focused on delivering value to its many clients investing in global infrastructure assets. By delivering operational efficiencies to their core back office functions, so they can focus on the assets and their ability to drive the energy transition.

BlackRock, the world’s biggest asset manager, has agreed to buy Adebayo Ogunlesi’s Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), a leading infrastructure fund manager, for $12.5 billion. “BlackRock will pay $3 billion of cash and about 12 million shares, worth about $9.5 billion at Thursday’s close, and the deal is expected to close in the third quarter.
