We are thrilled to welcome the new Industrial Growth Plan, which aims to increase the UK's offshore wind manufacturing capacity and establish the country as a global market leader.    Published by RenewableUK, The Offshore Wind Industry Council, The Crown Estate, and Crown Estate Scotland, the Industrial Growth Plan outlines a targeted approach to triple manufacturing capacity over the next decade, generating employment opportunities and securing the UK's leadership in international export markets.    The UK offshore wind industry already employs 32,000 people, and the measures set out in the plan would support an additional 10,000 jobs a year and boost the UK's economy by a further £25 billion between now and 2035.    Claire Mack, Chief Executive of Scottish Renewables, commented on the plan: "With an abundance of natural resources and a huge pipeline of projects, the UK stands on the cusp of a golden opportunity to build a world-class offshore wind supply chain. The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment published "Powering Prosperity: A New Horizon for Ireland's Offshore Wind Energy" on Friday (Link in comments to the document). IRDG Innovation Network welcomes the publication of this Strategy by Simon Coveney and the work by the Department in creating this strategy. This is a larger opportunity for Ireland than FDI has been. And its existential to the country and the planet. ABP News Release: Maritime Minister, Lord Davies, learns about ABP’s ambitious plans for Port Talbot ABP was delighted to welcome Maritime Minister, Lord Byron Davies, to ABP's port at Port Talbot on Friday 5 April, for a site tour and to learn more about ABP's ambitious plans to transform the port into a major hub for Floating Offshore Wind (FLOW) and wider green energy developments. Graeme Power-Hosking, the Head of the Future Port Talbot Programme, highlighted how ABP plans to transform the port into a major hub for the manufacturing, assembly and integration of FLOW components for projects in the Celtic Sea. Through planned investment of more than £500m by ABP, the Future Port Talbot Programme will unlock £1bn of investment in Port Talbot and the surrounding areas. This was a timely visit following the recent decision by the UK Government's Department for Energy Security and Net Zero to advance the Future Port Talbot Programme to the Primary List phase of the Floating Offshore Wind Manufacturing Investment Scheme (FLOWMIS), and provided Lord Davies with the opportunity to witness first-hand the potential of the port for the renewable energy sector. As reported by The Australian Financial Review, the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) is gearing up to significantly boost its investment spending, thanks to $19 billion from the Albanese government’s Rewiring the Nation fund. This investment will support crucial electricity transmission projects, including Transgrid’s HumeLink in NSW, AusNet’s VNI West in Victoria, NSW's first renewable energy zone, and the Marinus Link underwater cable to Tasmania. Although there are challenges in gaining social acceptance, CEFC’s Chief Executive, Ian Learmonth, is confident these projects will move forward successfully. Last financial year saw the CEFC invest $1.8 billion, including a record $490 million in NSW’s Central-West Orana renewable energy zone—its largest single transaction to date. The CEFC also made its first forays into home energy efficiency and the forestry sector, reflecting a diverse approach to clean energy investment. Despite rising costs and interest rates, the expanded Capacity Investment Scheme is expected to drive further growth, with the first auction receiving over 40GW of proposals, aiming to support 6GW of new power. Looking ahead, the CEFC is also playing a key role in the $2 billion Hydrogen Headstart program, set to announce funding for large-scale hydrogen projects by the end of the year. Despite recent setbacks in the sector, there is optimism that the program will deliver significant outcomes in the coming financial year. The Labour government has committed to spending £1.8bn over five years to upgrade the UK’s ports so that they can support its ambitious renewable energy plans, in particular the quadrupling of offshore wind.   As the Chancellor has said: “Ports are critical hubs for our nation, providing over 90% of trade into the country, connecting people, providing services for maritime energy facilities and delivering value for local communities…..Ports will be at the centre of Labour’s plans to make Britain a clean energy superpower.” The big question is whether the amount and the proposed timeframe are sufficient to achieve the aim of decarbonising the electricity grid by 2030. Following the first panel where we explored the role of government in setting up the foundations for sustainable financing, we have continued in the same tone. Next panel Powering Forward: Government’s Key Role in Renewable Energy Transition, organised in collaboration with the EBRD focused on the critical role governments have in the renewable energy transition. Our esteemed panellists Daniel Lancha, Partner at Alcazar Energy Partners, Matteo Colangeli, Director and Regional Head of Western Balkans at EBRD, Jovana (Tovarović) Joksimović, Assistant Minister for EU integration & International Cooperation, Min. of Mining & Energy of Serbia Saša Mujović, Minister of Energy and Mining of Montenegro and Maja Turkovic, Executive Vice President, CWP Europe, part of CWP Global, with the help of moderator Duško Krsmanović, Head of the Western Balkans and Central and Eastern Europe, UK Export Finance explored this crucial topic for the regional sustainable development. In order to decarbonise the power sector by 2030 - a much more ambitious target than the 2035 target of the previous administration - the government is aiming to double onshore wind and quadruple offshore capacity. Yet the length of time that it takes to get wind projects from the drawing board to completion suggests that this is almost impossible. The problems are well-known: the difficulties in getting planning permission and connections to the grid, not to mention the uncertainties around the level of available government subsidies. Would a National Energy Plan that removed some of the blockers make the government's plans more realistic?    This is one of the many themes that will be discussed at our UK and European Wind Energy Policy and Investment Summit, which is being held on 30 September at the Royal Garden Hotel in London.    The summit will explore the detail of the government's wind energy policies in the round, as part of wider review of the latest developments in the wind energy sector both in the UK and across Europe.
