I had a heartfelt conversation with one of our clients today. He is a dedicated butcher from the rural Klein Karoo. He shared his concerns about competing with a similar butchery that was recently awarded “Best Butchery with 3 or More Till Points” in South Africa at the 19th Cleaver Awards, hosted by SAMIC. It’s so easy to feel overwhelmed when faced with such accolades, but it’s important to remember that success isn’t a zero-sum game. In the world of business, there’s ample space for everyone to prosper. Each business has its unique strengths and stories that resonate with different customers. Our client’s commitment to providing high-quality, farm-processed meat directly to his community is a testament to his dedication and passion. While competitors may shine brightly, it’s crucial to recognize that their journey isn’t without challenges. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side; it’s green where you water it. By focusing on what makes his butchery special and continuing to serve his customers with excellence, our client can carve out his own path to success. I wanted to share some reflections about last Sunday's event. We didn't win any medals this year, and that's perfectly alright. I've always maintained that winning isn't everything. In fact, I genuinely believe that Sunday's performance was the best we've ever had at this event, or any event for that matter. My representative was quite upset about not winning because she put all her heart and soul into this. It's natural to feel that way, but I sent her the message below to help her see things from a different perspective. I explained to her that our victory isn't confined to just one night or event. We win every day through our dedication, teamwork, and the sheer effort we put into our work. Our success isn't measured by medals or awards, but by the impact we make, the growth we experience, and the satisfaction of knowing we did our best. This philosophy has guided us well and will continue to. Always take pride in your efforts and keep striving for excellence in our unique way. Remember to always compliment and value your team each and everyday. As a side note, it's worth mentioning that we received over 200 tags and reposts on social media that same night. This really illustrates that awards like buckles aren't the ultimate measure of success. Value market share is based on the total share of a company out of total segment sales. So as per picture below volume share of sting is more than red bull whereas value share is comparatively less. What makes you and your unique and special?   In what ways do you differentiate from your competition?   Are you focused on your competition or on your special sauce?   Daily Shake Up No. 852 borrows a lesson in differentiation from the Michigan’s most famous food – coney dogs. Michigan (and Detroit) are famous for coney dogs and, so much so, that the number 1 and number 2 rated coney dog restaurants are in Detroit. In fact, they’re on the same street. Actually, they’re right night door to each other – literally attached. Clearly, they have competition and yet they’re both thriving and have been for many years. How do they do it? I don’t know their respective secrets but I’m sure that there’s something that makes them different. When I visited them both several years ago one told me that the difference was vidalia onions versus regular onions. They also noted lamb skin hot dogs over regular hot dogs. The point is that we all have competition and the key to thriving is not being more like our competition. The key is to be different than our competition, even when it comes to coney dogs.   Don’t worry about your competition.
