How can knowledge transfer be used to widen EU excellence in advanced green technologies, sustainability and research management? 🤔💚 The WIDEX EU Project addresses one of the biggest problems for the European economy: the crucial demand for minerals and elements, particularly in strategic sectors. As the demand for new, important materials increases and the main raw material mining operations decline, sustainable solutions must be found within Europe's borders. The collaboration between the Technical University of Košice, a distinguished mining university and a primary reference center in Slovakia, and leading research institutions aims to bridge the research and innovation gap in the EU. With the support of the other partners across Europe, knowledge transfer will be the goal of overcoming this innovation gap in the various EU countries. We will lead the knowledge transfer of recovery critical raw materials (CRM) from primary sources through hydrometallurgical approaches. The European Raw Materials Act highlights the importance of green and non-invasive technologies for the CRM recovery and refining. Therefore, greener solutions and integral processes will be the main focus of our development to transfer these cutting-edge technologies to the Technical University of Košice. 🔋 Results of the Delphi Survey on a Just and Sustainable Lithium Battery Value Chain 🌱 I am pleased to announce that the results of the Delphi survey "A Just and Sustainable Lithium Battery Value Chain" are now available. This survey aimed to gather insights from experts worldwide regarding the challenges for sustainability and justice in the mining segment of the lithium battery value chain. The Executive Report presents a summary of the principal results in an aggregate format, while the Results Report displays findings broken down by respondents' country of residence (lithium-demanding vs. lithium-rich) and stakeholder group (industry, government, NGO, and academia). We encourage you to explore these materials and share them with potential stakeholders who may benefit from the insights provided. We trust that the findings will enhance your professional endeavors and contribute to the advancement of sustainability and justice in the lithium battery industry. This study was conducted as part of the research project “Green Dealings: Negotiating Lithium between South America and Europe for Batteries that Fuel a Just Transition”, funded by the Swiss Network for International Studies and led by the Geneva Graduate Institute. We are grateful for the support of our institutional partners: Inter-American Development Bank, ECLAC, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), EU-LAC Foundation / Fundación EU-LAC and the European Lithium Institute eLi Download the full report (EN): https://lnkd.in/dTxNvTvr Download the executive report (EN): https://lnkd.in/dbmgqVvw #Sustainability #Lithium #GreenDealings #JustTransition #Research #Innovation #GenevaGraduateInstitute #SustainableEnergy #InternationalCollaboration

📢 News update: E-TANDEM was presented during the 13th NGCS in Xiamen, China in April this year. Prof. Michael Claeys (from University of Cape Town, South Africa) and Prof. Gonzalo Prieto ( From Institute for Chemical Technology (CSIC), Valencia, Spain), were invited to lecture at the NGCS. This meeting brought together more than 800 participants representing over 220 industrial and academic institutions from around the globe. This prestigious triennial conference series has served for nearly 40 years as a prime forum to discuss advances in the valorization of C1 unconventional feedstocks, such as methane and CO2, into valuable energy carriers and chemicals. Claeys and Prieto presented recent developments in their teams on the (tandem) catalytic conversion of syngas to high-performance e-fuels. The Horizon Europe E-TANDEM project develops innovative hybrid catalytic routes to produce higher oxygenate compounds as advanced liquid e-fuels for hard-to-abate transport sectors, such as waterborne transport. 👉 For more news updates of our project, subscribe to our newsletter: https://lnkd.in/eBZEacwY 📄 https://e-tandem.eu/ngcs/ #HorizonEurope #CINEA #innovation #research #development #efuel #sustainability #tandemcatalysis #syngas #transport #waterbornetransport

📢 publication alert 📢 A publication originating from the BioWood project (funded by Research Foundation Flanders - FWO) in which KU Leuven, University of Antwerp and VITO joined forces to develop a new value chain for the Flemish bio-economy through inventive wood refining towards highly valuable agro-industrial chemicals. This paper describes the integration of a model on resource availability, a techno-economic assessment and MooV supply chain design to support the design of wood-based value chains at low TRL. To show the relevance, the methodology is applied to a case study on emerging reductive catalytic fractionation in Flanders. A joint effort of Annelies De Meyer, Sanne Verdonck, Ilié Storms, joachim lopez, Maxim Tschulkow, Tine Compernolle, Steven Van Passel, Jos Van Orshoven, Bruno Verbist, Guisson Ruben, Wouter Arts, Sander Van den Bosch, Joost Van Aelst, Bert Sels, Bart Muys. Two PhD positions in the governance of natural resources and sustainability for a just and fair energy transition Both PhD positions (project A and project B) form part of work packages under the research project ‘Frontiers of natural resource and sustainability governance for a just energy transition’ (FRONTIERS). At an overall level, FRONTIERS aims to advance knowledge for a just and fair transition, which involves and respects those (such as communities or individuals) who are at risk or in practice adversely affected by mining of minerals for the green transition. Comprising four complementary work packages and a focus on land-based and potential deep-sea mining as a field of natural resource exploration, we will explore effects of risk-based due diligence demands for the industry; industry and investors practices; and potentially complementary normative ideas related to the rights of nature. Ultimately, the project seeks to develop insights that may support a comprehensive assessment of eco-system impacts as an aspect of risk-based due diligence for mining of minerals for the transition and investments in the industry and the value chain, including the solar and wind power and energy storage industries. Some fieldwork in mining countries and/or with relevant industries is envisaged. Please see https://frontiers.cbs.dk/ for details.
