Many biodegradable materials such as polyvinyl alcohol or polycaprolactone can be electrospun to obtain biodegradable membranes. 💡 The obtained biodegradable membranes can provide antimicrobial properties and enhanced wound healing by integrated biologically active components. Silver nano composites, bacteriophages and antimicrobial enzymes offer new opportunities and alternatives to antibiotics. Today in the lab, I conducted an experiment to extract pectin from the leftover pulp of apple juice, showcasing a sustainable approach to utilizing by-products. We started by mixing the apple pulp with acidified water, then heated the mixture in a microwave to release the pectin. After straining the mixture, the liquid filtrate was placed in a -40°C freezer. Once chilled, we added ethanol in a 1:1 ratio and waited for 20-25 minutes to precipitate the pectin. Finally, the mixture was strained through muslin cloth to isolate the extracted pectin. This experiment highlights the potential of transforming waste into valuable resources in biotechnology.
