In the drive to build a global clean-hydrogen economy, two electrolyzer technologies — alkaline and proton exchange membrane — have dominated most of the conversation around green hydrogen production. But a third electrolysis technology, known as solid oxide, is starting to gain traction due to its promise of greater efficiency and, in particular, its unique suitability to generate hydrogen for processes further downstream like steel, ammonia and e-fuels production.
