Qcision (formerly Feintool Technologie AG) and the Fraunhofer Institute IWU have a longstanding partnership. “We have worked together on machine development multiple times in the past.“ explains Prof. Dr. Verena Kräusel, Head of Business Unit Forming Technology at the Fraunhofer IWU in Chemnitz. “The goal of expanding our collaboration with the FB one fineblanking press is to advance the series production of high-precision metallic bipolar plates. We aim to leverage Qcision's experience in bipolar plate production and fineblanking technology.” Markus Schaltegger, CEO of Qcision, sees the collaboration as a flagship project. “With the FB one, Fraunhofer IWU has decided on a state-of-the-art fineblanking press that meets all relevant requirements for the successful series production of metallic bipolar plates. Rigidity, high precision, energy-efficient operation, and flexible usability are particularly important.” 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 The use of the FB one fineblanking press in the "Referenzfrabik.H2“ is part of a development partnership. Both the Fraunhofer Institute IWU and Qcision firmly believe that hydrogen is a key component of the energy systems of the future. Electrolyzers store energy in the form of hydrogen, while fuel cells use it, for example, to power trucks in a climate-friendly way. Strategic Partnership in SOEC Technology thyssenkrupp nucera and the Fraunhofer IKTS are entering into a strategic #partnership for a purpose of strengthening our #hydrogen technology portfolio with the highly innovative high-temperature #electrolysis (SOEC) of the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS. After 20 years of extensive research and development work in #SOEC (Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cell) #technology, thyssenkrupp nucera and Fraunhofer IKTS want to work to take the final steps in high-temperature electrolysis (SOEC) toward industrial manufacturing and application. As early as the first quarter of 2025, a #pilot plant planned and built by Fraunhofer IKTS is scheduled to start operation for the production of high-temperature electrolysis stacks with SOE cells – the core elements of the SOEC stacks – initially in small quantities. Timely opportunity to join the project consortium for a proposal linked to #battery cell development for #electricvehicles #evs! The aim of the project is to achieve significant improvements in battery #energy density: 10-30% higher than in currently available #batteries, and a fast charging capacity of 10-80% in less than 10 minutes. Additional objectives include the integration of state-of-the-art cell #technologies and multifunctional, lightweight #materials, and addressing innovative #packaging methods, towards smarter battery cell concepts. Imagine producing #hydrogen so efficiently that it exceeds global targets set for 2050. 📈 This is now a reality thanks to the German-Australian #HyGATE project, a groundbreaking collaboration between Fraunhofer ILT and Hysata, to create the world's first #sustainable hydrogen #supplychain. Hysata has developed a revolutionary capillary electrolyzer that achieves an astounding system efficiency of 95% (41.5 kWh/kg), setting a new standard in the industry and exceeding IRENA's 2050 target. This electrolyzer uses small capillaries to evenly distribute water, significantly reducing energy consumption and making #greenhydrogen production more cost- effective and sustainable. The Fraunhofer ILT is also at the forefront, developing advanced laser-based processes for the production of key components such as ... 💧 Metal foam electrodes: Developed by the Fraunhofer ILT, these increase the reaction surface area and thermal conductivity, which are crucial for optimal #hydrogen production. 💧 Bipolar Plates: Using special laser microwelding techniques, the plates can be manufactured with increased precision. 💧 Nanofoams: By laser-inducing nanofoams, the catalytic converters are improved tremendously, making hydrogen production even more efficient. Ageing of fuel cells is one of the main challenges for their use in the mobility sector. Highly dynamic operating conditions, like startup and shutdown, pose a serious risk for accelerated degradation of the carbon support structure. This vital topic was dealt with by our colleague Marek Bültel in his Master’s thesis, which was written in collaboration between TLK-Thermo and University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (https://lnkd.in/dgXRdNUU). He implemented a new electrochemical model that allows to predict the local time-evolution of the electrode potential and carbon corrosion at the fuel cell cathode. The model has shown that low temperature and humidity within the fuel cell help to mitigate carbon loss. He was happy to present his successful work at last week’s ModVal 2024 - 20th Symposium on Modeling and Validation of Electrochemical Energy Technologies.
