⭐ ODIN visited #SDU today ⭐ Programme leader Marie Louise Conradsen presented Open Discovery Innovation Network (ODIN) today ahead of the Kick Off on the 27th of May – see link below. ODIN is a collaboration platform where industry and academia co-create open research projects relevant for drug discovery and diagnostics. ODIN is a 5-year collaboration platform from 2024-2028 sponsored by the Novo Nordisk Foundation with up to 180 M DKK. Pre-competitive collaboration entails partnerships between companies, universities, research centres, and patient associations that collaborate with the aim of facilitating the translation process between basic research and application by exchanging knowledge, data, technologies, and resources with each other in a patent-free playground. This approach can certainly be of interest in relation to the new research strategy for #SDU_SUND, which we look forward to launching soon. We’re looking forward to taking a group of leading biotech companies to #Sweden next week as part of Innovate UK’s Global Business Innovation Programme on Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMP). We’ll be meeting a wide range of contacts to forge collaboration between our delegates and Swedish partners in this key sector.  Our visit highlights the ever-growing relationship between the UK and Sweden - in 2022, the UK and Sweden signed a joint MOU on health and life sciences, highlighting ATMP as a priority. We’ll visit the Karolinska Institutet and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, we'll learn about new ATMP facilities in Flemingsberg and Gothenburg, and will be seeing the renowned Sahlgrenska University Hospital and the Lund University Stem Cell Centre.  And we'll be meeting lots of ATMP experts along the way to explore the considerable opportunities. ✴ BGN's Bio Team shines at the Biomed Israel 2024 We had a strong presence at the recent Biomed Israel 2024 conference in Tel Aviv. Our bio team Galit Mazooz - Perlmuter 🎗 Ph.D Hagit Alon, (PhD) Micha Oestereich showcased cutting-edge technologies from Ben-Gurion University researchers and engaged in a whirlwind of activities. Our team had personal discussions with leading biotech and pharmaceutical companies, entrepreneurs who are seeking to adopt new technologies, venture capitalists, and industry colleagues. Conversations focused on potential collaborations, partnerships, and pathways to commercialize BGN's innovative biomedical technologies. The team also connected with existing partners like Magneto Thrombectomy Solutions, and OncoRedox Ltd., companies licensed by BGN .🤝 The goal was to drive innovation by facilitating the integration of Ben-Gurion's groundbreaking research into products and therapies. Through these meetings and networking opportunities, we took strides toward assimilating the university's biomedical breakthroughs into the broader life sciences industry. One week after the #ECM2024 conference, and I am still buzzing with excitement from all the stimulating talks that were held. I have primarily worked on immune cells in infectious diseases, and had a small stint working on fibroblasts as my first job after my masters. I managed to connect with two old colleagues from those days, and see all the work they and their teams have been working on for the last two decades. Whilst cells are important in health and disease, the structure that maintains the tissues holds valuable information for disease stratification, disease progression, responsiveness to treatment, and many other aspects of disease pathology and response. The potential in measuring matrix proteins and observing the patterns of expression, we can learn a lot about patient populations and the heterogeneity there is. We are not clones, not every person responds the same. Understanding our differences and similarities can help pharma screen for the right patients, and identify populations that need novel therapeutics. I am a convert. We are delighted to announce that our Institute has secured another funding from the European Commission - this time a substantial EUR 2.5 million through the ERA Chairs programme. This funding will enable us to establish an excellence hub of Chemical Biology for Biological and Medical Applications. The project represents a significant milestone for our Institute, enhancing our capabilities in developing novel therapies and diagnostic tools. IPC (IChF) researchers will get access to numerous training and travel opportunities, and the Institute will strengthen its standing within the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industries. "We have a very good experience with ERA Chair funding scheme - research on vision process carried out at ICTER (International Centre for Translational Eye Research) started at IChF when Prof. Maciej Wojtkowski won an open competition for ERA Chair within the "Create" project. The research agenda of the new ERA Chair complements existing interdisciplinary research areas at the Institute. At the beginning of the year, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation and the German Council of Science and Humanities invited #MedST speaker Prof. Fabian Kiessling and Prof Laura De Laporte, as spokespersons for the TransMedMat Cluster of Excellence application, to prepare a corresponding full proposal for funding as part of the #ExcellenceStrategy 🚀. In line with this, the DWI – Leibniz-Institut für Interaktive Materialien, the Uniklinik RWTH Aachen and RWTH Aachen University have now launched the socalled Leibniz ScienceCampus "ACTISONO" (Sonopharmacology - Activation of drugs by ultrasound) 👏. https://lnkd.in/etYHhy4r In this interdisciplinary network, researchers from the fields of #chemistry, #biology, #medicine and #engineering are developing innovative technologies for the activation of active #pharmaceutical ingredients via #ultrasound. The researchers' vision and goal is the target-specific treatment of patients using ultrasound as an external trigger, for example to combat liver damage or bacterial infections.  The researchers, who can already build on promising laboratory investigations, will initially work together for four years. The total funding of the Interdisciplinary DWI Leibniz ScienceCampus for Innovative Therapies amounts to about 3.6 million euros. I am incredibly proud to announce that we have been awarded a £1.6M project from Innovate UK’s Biomedical Catalyst 2023 Round 2: Industry-led R&D 🙌 This application took a tremendous amount of effort, including working well into the early hours of many mornings to perfect the initial submission and cancelling leave over Christmas to prepare for the interview stage. Innovate UK grants (rightly!) require significant work; the application is scrutinised by five experienced assessors from various areas across Life Sciences. The next-stage interview is then attended by up to ten other people, with our panel including professionals from the NHS, academia, and CDMOs, among others. With a pot of £17.8M, and average project cost at £415,191, only 30 of the 358 applications could be funded 💰 . It is therefore truly gratifying to have so many experts agree that the cause we are developing solutions for is important and worthy of this substantial investment ✊ We do not take this funding lightly and will work tirelessly to ensure the success of our exciting project. So Many Conferences — So Little Time: Which Conference to Visit? I often get asked by companies and industry stakeholders which conferences they should visit or which are worth attending in the first half of the year. I have been in the circle for 25 years now and there is no straight answer. The standard response is, it depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for general partnering, there are a number of big conferences like the "BIO International Convention" and "#bioeuropespring ", where you can meet people from all over the world. However, there are also some (smaller) regional-focused conferences like the "Swiss Biotech Day #swissbiotechday", which has grown to over 1,800 participants, or the "Asia Bio Partnering Forum #ASIABIO" and "BIO KOREA". There are also therapeutic or technology-focused conferences like "Advanced Therapies" in London, "Festival of Biologics" in San Diego, or "The World Vaccine Congress" in DC. If you are fundraising, there are options like the "BIO CEO & Investor Conference" in NY for more mature (public) companies, "RESI Conferences Life Science Nation (LSN)" (Atlanta and Barcelona) for earlier stage (private) companies, as well as "LSX World Congress" in London or "The Annual European Life Sciences CEO Forum #Sachs_ELSF" in Zurich. Additionally, different investment banks host conferences, of which "JPM JPMorgan Chase & Co." in San Francisco is where the industry meets. For very intimate interactions with other Biotech CEOs, I can recommend the "Biotech CEO Summit CEO Summit by Demy-Colton" in Barcelona and La Jolla.
