This week's #GrantPartnerSpotlight is La Cocina from the North Region of Colorado. This organization is named after the warmest, most inviting room in a home. It is a space that hosts people, nourishes them, and allows for conversations and transformations. It is "la cocina" or "the kitchen." With this in mind, it is no surprise that La Cocina's mantra is “todas las revoluciones empiezan en la cocina,” or “all revolutions start in the kitchen,” a quote from Dolores Huerta. And, what La Cocina does is nothing short of revolutionary. Rather than supporting youth through clinical work, La Cocina uses a crisis intervention model that focuses on helping people support one another to create a larger sense of belonging. With a primary clientele of youth from Spanish-speaking or multilingual homes, intergenerational care and conflict can be a large source of stress, Janina, the CEO says. To remedy this, La Cocina has focused on turning youth friend groups into resources by building capacity through co-youth-designed models of support. La Cocina serves clients in Denver, Jefferson, Larimer, and Weld Counties, as well as counties along the I-70 corridor. Additionally, it has a small project in Fort Morgan where an intern provides services twice a month. Thanks, La Cocina, for revolutionizing mental health support in Colorado. This adds another layer of complexity to the normal and naturally occurring challenges that face any group working on the ground to create real change. These challenges include: 1. As both an associate for the specialty toy shop Snickelfritz Toys as well as a mental health advocate — this is too cool. “How can we strengthen the skills kids need for their mental, emotional, and social health and build resilience through play? It allows us to see toys and games through a new lens that shows us in greater detail the impact they can have on children as they play.” #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthadvocate #mentalhealthawarenessmonth

How can we better honor our own humanity? And the humanity of others? It's okay to not be okay, but now what? Mental health stigma is a big challenge everyone, and particularly in communities of color. The Big Health team had the honor of hosting the wonderful Andrea Brown, Executive Director of the Black Mental Health Alliance for Education & Consultation, Inc. for a discussion on honoring our humanity and the humanity of others. Here are some of of the things we learned: 1. We have to see our mental health as a priority and free ourselves from the stigma. Therapy is not a bad word. It says “I am working on me.” This means being comfortable setting and enforcing our boundaries. 2. We have to be able to do the brave thing, admit when we need help, and seek it out. Dig into why we don’t feel whole through journaling, therapy, and/or conversations with our community. 3. We have to be seeing each other, honoring each others humanity, honoring our own humanity. #Sawubona means we see you, we see all of one another. This means taking the time to greet others, to actively listen and engage, and recognizing the value of the other human beings around us.
