This week Remi Clare and I had the opportunity to attend the EDIS (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Science and Health) symposium on Inclusive Leadership at The Francis Crick Institute along with a group of other Wellcome Sanger Institute staff including Cybele Fernandes Saher Ahmed Burcu Bronner-Anar Lorenzo Mazza David Nicholson Lizzy Thorpe. Our two biggest takeaways were: 1) Representative leadership isn’t enough. We need to move toward a position where people aren’t all treated the same (they may need different things) but they are valued the same and the actions of organisations reflect this. 2) EDI isn’t just ticking a box. We need to be doing more to raise awareness of the challenges faced by all of our staff, and to promote a movement towards inclusive leadership.
