I always talk about the power of stories. We can all be agents for change and it starts with open and honest conversation. I could have continued the discussion beyond the hour and I know we didn't get to all the questions, so watch this space because we will be doing more of this! In honor of Women’s History Month, Brooks Pierce is spotlighting women attorneys and senior staff at the firm. They will continue the conversation about women’s history and achievements this month by providing advice and insight about being a woman in the legal profession. Jessi Thaller-Moran, partner at Brooks Pierce, shares advice to women starting a legal career: "One piece of legal advice to women starting a legal career is that there are a million ways to advocate for your client. Loudest and most combative is not always the most effective. Use the beginning of your career as an excuse to “try on” advocacy styles from mentors, friends, colleagues, even people you spot in the courtroom or across the table at a deal. Don’t let anyone make you feel small. Speak boldly and hold your head high. Q: What role has mentorship played in your professional growth? A: I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for the folks who saw potential and poured into me. Time is the most precious resource, and I am honored by the many people who have shared theirs with me. A close mentor once said “You’d be surprised what happens when you push a door open.” I’ve always liked this distinction from the idea that opportunities would simply open before me. Instead, I often keep a look out for small openings that may lead to greatness if acted upon. Today we celebrate Jennifer Bittel Derby, a senior counsel attorney in our Pittsburgh office. Jen works on estate and trust planning and administration, business succession planning, long-term care planning, and elder law. Read more of Jen's words below: Something that was really inspirational for me as an aspiring female attorney was a conversation I had with my grandmother while I was in law school. She shared with me that she was so proud and excited for me to be a female attorney and to be a professional in my field, as it was very unlikely for women of her generation to be able to pursue a career in the law and attend professional school. After having this conversation, I felt really grateful to be a female practicing in the modern era, as many doors are open for females now that were never opened for earlier generations. My law school class, graduating in 2012, had more females than males. When speaking to mentors earlier in my legal career, this was never the case in law schools 20 to 30 years ago. I have been very lucky to have some great mentors in my career, including many wonderful female mentors. It is hugely important to me to mentor other women in our profession and I will continue to do so throughout my career. Work-life balance can be very difficult for female professionals, especially when starting a family and raising children, and having mentors to look up to who have successfully achieved their own work-life balance helps young female attorneys to stay motivated in our profession. #womenshistorymonth #spotlightseries #womenlawyers

However, women also held only a small percentage of law firm leadership jobs in 2020. They were 12% of managing partners, 28% of governance committee members, and 27% of practice group leaders, according to the NAWL.
