Some will know my alma mater is advertising—not in a small way. Having spent the past three years rolling around in the wilds of TikTok investing in upstart brands, something is gutwarming about Weetabix launching a well-lit, well-cast, slow-moving, widescreen contrived TV advert. With £10 million in brand investment, you can turn to slow media and awaken decades of legacy brand value: “It’s got to be Heinz.” Like a parody of impact brands on a mission, Weetabix’s message is an honest lie. Comforting news, as you discover your anti-slavery chocolate uses child labour, your bamboo toilet roll isn’t made of bamboo, and your mutual bank intends to close more branches. Big brands turning to British humour will be the theme of 2024 because the UK is in pain. It is the only G7 country where real household expenditure hasn’t recovered to pre-pandemic levels, pointing to a terrible decline in disposable income. The Broken Plate report found that healthy food is twice as expensive per calorie. The Union Jack pants-on croissant joke is meh, but I must remind myself and my therapist to find things funny again. Sometimes, the most positive impact a brand can make is raising the corner of my mouth into a tiny smile - which the spot duly did. We back new brands and dance circles around a lack of innovation in the supermarket. But when legacy brands play to their strengths, with all the yapping in social media and plucky branding, I feel like we’re showing up to an afternoon of paintball with a water pistol. At a certain point, startups must get honest and big about why they’re there. And they have to bake millions into their raise for marketing and break the hand-to-mouth survival cycle. It’s never been cheaper or more straightforward to achieve lift-off if you have a plan in the capital required. Weetabix has given up trying to tell me it’s updated itself. It's stopped pretending to be a mix-with-anything granola, a grab-and-go shake, enjoyed hot or cold. Have I had my Weetabix? Come to think of it. No. Maybe I’ll add it to the list.
