In recent years, a noteworthy shift has occurred in the conversations surrounding climate change. What was once a landscape overflowing with blatant denial and misinformation has gradually transformed into a more balanced science-based discussion. ❄ 🌤 💧 Despite the mounting evidence and tireless efforts of researchers here in B.C. and around the world, a stubborn community of climate change deniers persists. It is crucial that we recognize the humanity of our scientific leaders. They are not immune to the impacts of deliberate bullying and fear-mongering tactics — ranging from public verbal attacks to death threats. However, their dedication to the pursuit of knowledge and the betterment of society remains unwavering. 🔥 Many people consider droughts to be a rare occurrence – in fact they are a regular part of the Danube climate. 🥵 Droughts have a high damage potential: economic losses, ecological damages, and implications on human health. And due to climate change, these droughts are unfortunately becoming more frequent. The ICPDR is currently developing an Overview Report with a list of suggestions for possible future activities addressing droughts on transboundary level that should be available by the end of 2024. ⏰ On May 15th, the European Environment Agency will be discussing the risks and solutions posed by climate change on water and public health. The changing climate in Europe has led to unprecedented weather patterns, impacting water cycles, water quality, and human health. Without decisive action, these challenges could escalate, necessitating urgent adaptation measures.   On the agenda:   ➡️ A new report under the European Climate and Health Observatory initiative on floods, droughts, and water quality will provide insights into the profound effects of climate-related changes on human health and well-being.   ➡️ Insightful discussions between climate and health experts, and policymakers.   Extreme weather events, such as floods and droughts, are scenarios prone to creating waterborne diarrheal diseases, which can be of particular concern for vulnerable populations. Understanding the intricate connection between extreme weather events, such as floods and droughts, water quality, and human health is at the heart of the #SPRINGSProject. Through four case studies in Europe and Africa, the project will measure and model the impact of climate extremes on local health, in particular for waterborne diarrheal diseases.
