Today on the World COPD Day, pleased to share our recent publication with World Health Organization (WHO) team. "Tobacco and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (‎COPD) - WHO tobacco knowledge summaries". It has been a great pleasure and honour to work the WHO. It is very gratifying to see that work done by our research group in #smoking, #vaping and COPD is now informing global community and policy, a true translation. This document is the eighth in a series of Tobacco Knowledge Summaries. It is prepared with the objective to summarize the association between tobacco use and #COPD, as well as describe the effectiveness of interventions to reduce tobacco use and tobacco-related complications. This is also intended as an advocacy tool to widely include health care professionals in the fight for tobacco control and prevention of tobacco-related adverse health effects. EMA gave positive opinion to use Fexinidazole, the first full oral treatment for these patients having no option so far than an arsenic base treatment. I am very proud working @Foundation S - The Sanofi Collective  collaborating actively with @Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative - DNDi, and @WHO to accelerate access and donate fexinidazole allowing HCPs to treat the T.b. rhodesiense form of SleepingSickness, with a highly effective and safe alternative. #ActWithImpact #BeatNTDs

COPD is currently third major killer disease & responsible for 3 million deaths worldwide. Today's climate crisis with poor air quality and extreme weather conditions are posing risk to patients living with the disease. World COPD day is an opportunity for us to reflect on the different ways, we reduce the burden of COPD. In line with this year theme of 'Breathing is Life - Act earlier'. We in Respiratory are committed to raise awareness on the importance of HealTHY lungs. We are extremely privileged to work with a team of dedicated respiratory stakeholders who are passionate towards discovering & developing respiratory medicines that improves treatment outcomes for patients. Today, as we mark #WorldAsthmaDay2024, we must face the reality of #asthma care in the UK. We have lost ten years since the National Review of Asthma Deaths (NRAD). In that time very little has changed. Hospitalisations caused by asthma have increased over the last two decades, mortality rates have remained stagnant, and in 2023 alone, the UK prescribed approximately 17 million short-acting beta-agonist (SABA) inhalers to patients – the overuse of which, highlighted along with the associated risks, features in recent safety warnings from the European Medicines Agency. This is shocking and unacceptable.   We possess a thorough understanding of asthma and its optimal treatment options, but what is lacking is clear national leadership. We urgently require a national target to reduce avoidable asthma deaths, new guidelines reflecting the evidence, and a standardised framework for implementation across England's 42 regional health systems.   NRAD outlined clear recommendations a decade ago. Now is the time for decisive action to save lives. This is why we have joined leaders from across the clinical and patient community in calling for urgent action, including setting a national target to eliminate avoidable asthma deaths.   #NRADat10 #Asthmacare

Today is World Kidney Day, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most significant health challenges facing the world. People living with CKD, and other cardiorenal conditions like heart failure, are at a particularly high risk for hyperkalaemia (HK), or elevated levels of potassium in the blood. When HK is diagnosed, RAASi medication is often reduced or discontinued which can have serious health consequences. We must recognise that HK should not be a barrier to optimised care. At AstraZeneca, we’re advancing research to expand understanding on HK management to hopefully improve outcomes and quality of life for patients like Barb. Our efforts are also focused on supporting physicians in providing optimal care, with an emphasis on the cardiorenal connection, to ultimately protect patients’ vital organs. I was so grateful to be part of the World COPD Day event at Parliament House yesterday. The Blueprint for Action on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease developed by the Lung Foundation is one of the first steps in achieving this years theme of “Breathing is Life - Act Earlier" I have COPD and most likely have had it since my mid 30’s, I have most of this risk factors but was misdiagnosed for years, the stigma and ignorance is still alive and well. We need to embrace COPD as an “everyones” risk and support research for better outcomes and encourage and educate for community management. Breathlessness is one of the most terrifying things a person can experience. The retirement age for me is 70, it is not a choice so how do I stay well? With coordinated care, empathy and access to services and supports not available to those still working. COPD is no longer an older persons disease. Due to the culmination of all that we breath in during our lifetime COPD is now occurring younger and younger. Before we face a world crisis, more support is needed for younger patients to live their best lives.
