A Journey of Continuous Learning As my internship concluded, one of my mentors Disal Haputhanthrie offered guidance: "Maintain a balance of work and life, for this is just one of many exciting stops along your engineering journey." His words ring true as I reflect on all that I've learned. Over the past months, I've undertaken a variety of fascinating projects. I've designed and fabricated vehicle bodies, analyzed complex mechanical systems through reverse engineering, conducted battery tests, and modified battery modules and cooling systems. Each experience helped strengthen my technical skills and understanding of real-world challenges. Endless thanks go to mentors Chanaka Rathnayake Rangana Vidumal pushpamal karunarathna Disal Haputhanthrie Prasitha Sathsara Madura Herath Indunil Dhanushka for steering me expertly through challenges with patience and support. When I hit the occasional roadblock, their encouragement pushed me to learn from mistakes and give the next problem an even stronger try. It's because of them that I now truly see how many undiscovered areas remain in this creative field. My time at Vega Innovations revealed engineering's depths hold way more than initially met the eye. What once seemed shallow is a vast, intricate domain left to explore. I feel fortunate for the knowledge and confidence gained to do just that. As one chapter closes, I feel energized to start the next. Launching into the engineering world, I realized early on that the challenges we face today require not just technical skills but a sharp eye for safety and efficiency. Through my internships at Aeronautical Research Center and Giad Industrial Group, I delved deep into the practical side of engineering - from design to documentation, fabrication to troubleshooting. The transition from academic knowledge to real-world application was a journey of growth, resilience, and critical thinking. It highlighted the importance of collaborative workspaces where ideas can flourish and solutions emerge through collective expertise.

During Casper Luiten's internship at Aeronamic he developed a numerical model for a Vapor Compression Cycle (VCC) system. And so thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and programming became his world. It wasn't an easy assignment, but Casper enjoyed applying his theoretical knowledge to a practical project. As we wrap up National Engineers Week, we’d love to share with you some advice we compiled from the team this week: “Make sure you love what you do, pick a type of engineering that you get excited about. Also, good work ethic and ownership will get you further than any degrees or licenses.” – Jackie Rowland, PE “Once you’re in your engineering classes, reach out to the different local firms for internship opportunities, don’t wait for the companies to advertise an internship opportunity to you. There are several different paths in each engineering discipline and an internship is the best way to preview what a typical day looks like in that particular field.” – Ben Pearson, PE “Make sure you learn as much as you can in school about how to solve problems and think creatively. Once you get to the real world all the variables and assumptions are not given to you, so you need to know how to break down something complex in order to solve the real-world problem.” – Parker Rowland, ME, MBA “If you’re unsure what field of engineering to choose, I highly recommend taking an intro class or other exploratory engineering class if your school offers it. It’s also totally normal to change your field of engineering multiple times before you find the one for you. 🌟 Wrapping Up an Amazing Summer at Wisk! 🌟 This week marked the end of my 10-week internship as a Materials and Processes Engineering Intern at Wisk Aero, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Boeing. I want to extend a massive thank you to my fantastic mentor Taylor Fernandez and the rest of the M&P Team at Wisk and Aurora Flight Sciences! 🔧 Engineering in Action: This internship was my first step into the industry and gave me direct exposure to what goes into certifying an eVTOL aircraft. Working closely with the fabrication and assembly floor, I witnessed the rate at which progress was being made at Wisk and how my work impacted the process. From the mechanical strength testing and assisting in revising the Wisk Process Specifications, I delved deep into the technical side of composite structures. I also had the opportunity to conduct composite prepreg layups, bonding test coupons, and structural adhesive failure mode analysis. 🚀 Personal Growth: Beyond the technical skills, this experience has been a journey of personal growth. My largest takeaway from the internship came from my chat with Xiang Li, PE. Simplicity is what makes a good engineer great -- no matter how complicated your engineering work is, you must be able to conclude and pass on that information in a simple matter. You must always think about the end-consumer of your work; if the engineers or technicians who will build upon your work cannot understand it, your work as an engineer isn’t complete. This mentality is something that I have begun to incorporate in my life and will stick with me for the rest of my career! 🏆 Key Achievements: - Conducted mechanical testing and data analysis/presentation for surface preparation methods for structural bonding, following ASTM Standards - Assisted the revision of the structural bonding Wisk Process Specifications for Gen 6 aircraft production - Authored test programs, root cause and corrective action investigation for discolored materials, surface resin starvation bonding strength study 🎯 Looking Ahead: As I move forward in my career, I’m eager to continue building on this foundation and experience this summer. I view internships as a chance to learn technical skills and explore different aspects of aerospace engineering. This summer, I was able to explore the structures side of an aircraft. Next summer, I am looking forward to stepping my foot into the aero/performance side of the aircraft as my interest in this field has grown recently from talking to engineers in those fields. I’m excited about the future and look forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead! A big thank you to everyone I met at Wisk and to those who supported me along the way. Thank you to Julie Bulrice and her team for the opportunity to be a part of such a cool company! I’m also extremely grateful for the guidance and mentorship I received from Jai Loonker and Saakar B. throughout the years!
