Have you ever thought about whether the pressure we're under to get internships is normal? Because it's kind of insane. I don't know about you, but for me, it started my first year of design school and has gotten worse ever since. Here are the results from a poll I posted last week, which people from all over the world answered... In some places, it's uncommon to have more than one design internship before graduating, and in other places, three might feel like a minimum. 🤯 It was comforting to see that about 40% of you only had one internship during college, some of you even had zero, and you all seem to be doing great for yourselves! If you were part of the 5%, how'd you do it, and most importantly, how'd you find the time? I don't believe that our career success relies on the number of internships we get, and I know that there are plenty of other ways to gain experience and advance our careers, but I also can't deny that internships are important. There's a reason we want them: job experience, looks good on a resume, career exploration, being able to practice what we've learned—the list goes on. Under the original post, Alessio Caddeo explained to me how different the norm was in Italy compared to the U.S., and now I'm curious to know what the culture surrounding design internships is like in other countries and universities. I'm also curious to know how times have changed. So, let's have a chat, because I want to know what goes on outside of my little bubble, and I think you might also... Yesterday marked the end of my summer internship at Autodesk in San Francisco, and what a tremendous journey it has been! I have a pocket full of stories to talk about. Here are the most important soft skills I’ve developed: 1. Embrace Change: Relocating from the East Coast to the West Coast for three months was a daunting task filled with doubts. But I leaped and Man was it worth it! New people, places, and experiences have the power to shape your life in unexpected ways, so whenever you get the chance, embrace the opportunity to see things from a new perspective. 2. Take pleasure in walking into a room full of strangers: I used to feel uncomfortable in crowds, but now I genuinely enjoy meeting new people and learning about their lives, journeys, and experiences. How did I overcome this? I made it a goal to connect with 4 new people each week, scheduled calls with colleagues from across the globe at Autodesk and made sure to attend events around San Francisco at least 3 times a week. The insights I gained were invaluable. 3. Showcase your worth and Brand yourself: It’s important to let others see what you’re capable of. Don’t hesitate to take the lead and show your skills. Talk about what excites you, your personal values, and how they define who you are. Owning your narrative is key to making a lasting impression. 4. Dive into the unknown: You don’t need to be a master of everything right away. While your expertise gives you confidence, the excitement of learning something new is equally important. Embrace the learning curve, give yourself time, and don’t give up—this is how growth happens. 5. Ask for help: Never underestimate the power of seeking help. You’d be surprised how willing people are to lend a hand when you ask. Don’t be afraid to reach out—it can make all the difference. Thank you, Autodesk for the opportunity.

I feel this! I graduated with zero internships under my belt. My school (SCAD) also did studio-type courses with different brands and companies to help entire classes get some real-world experience, but I didn't do any of those either. I think I relate to Brad in that it did make it a little harder to start out. I ended up taking a "leap of faith" by leaving the city I was in for a bigger job pool (NYC) and luckily it worked out. However, I don't feel it set me back too far, and by the time I was leaving my first career job I felt like I had made good progress in skills, experience, and networking. As someone who now reviews resumes and screens candidates, I don't put much value into an internship unless it's a program I'm familiar with. I tend to look more at portfolios- though if I see more than 2 internships on a resume my expectations are raised quite a bit. Looking back, I do think having an internship would have made life easier for these two reasons: 1) Networking, and getting to know how teams work beyond just "the designers" and 2) Having non-school projects to showcase in a portfolio Both of these things are still within reach of any design student, regardless of internship opportunities

Here are the key takeaways from my internship: 🔹 Product Development: I honed my skills in the end-to-end process of product development, encompassing strategic planning, brainstorming, execution, and market release, followed by evaluating its success. 🔹 Value: Understanding the measurement of product value was crucial, helping me gauge the effectiveness of a product in solving customer problems, pricing it appropriately, and identifying areas for improvement. 🔹 Market Research: I immersed myself in the intricacies of market research, learning how to assess the viability of a new product or service by directly engaging with potential customers, defining target markets, and gathering valuable feedback. 🔹 Product Ideation: I developed expertise in gathering, prioritizing, and implementing ideas to enhance product or service offerings, ensuring a continuous focus on innovation. 🔹 Concept Design: The early phase of product development, where I explored various aspects such as user experience, usability, styling, and technology to lay out the general concept of a product. 🔹 3D Design & Modeling: Leveraging 3D modeling technology, I acquired the ability to create realistic product prototypes with vivid details, surpassing the limitations of traditional photographs. 🌟 My Journey to Writing a Master’s Thesis at Specific Companies 🌟 Ever since I stepped into my UX master’s program, I had two crystal-clear goals: Try to keep working while studying + Write my thesis at companies I admired. It wasn’t just a dream; it was my roadmap (Refer to the pic; my figjam file written 2 years ago) Here’s how I turned that dream into reality: 1. Early Integration ⏰ Upon moving to Stockholm for my studies, I immediately sought part-time internships, successfully securing positions at two companies while juggling my coursework during the first year. 2. Elevating the Experience 🚘 My third semester was a breakthrough, landing a paid UX internship at Volvo Cars. This was a significant step towards immersing myself in a larger organizational context. 3. Thesis Collaboration 🗣 With Volvo Cars firmly in my sights for my thesis, I leveraged my internship to explore opportunities within the company. I have knocked the door at different teams and people. After 20+ fikas within the company, I eventually have secured a position to conduct my thesis research there. And here I am, still on this adventure. 🌠 People keep asking me for tips on finding industry opportunities while studying, so I thought I’d share my journey.
