🌍 Black History Month Reflections: Elevate, Celebrate, and Act! As we commemorate Black History Month, let's consider some crucial questions: 1️⃣ What mechanisms and resources are in place for recruiting, retaining, developing, and promoting black employees? 2️⃣ Would your black employees find your organization's messaging around racial equity consistent with their actual experiences? How open are your conversations with them? 3️⃣ Have you asked your black employees about their experiences with equitable treatment and pay? 4️⃣ Are black individuals well-represented in senior leadership at your organization? 5️⃣ Does your organization proactively seek out and cultivate partnerships with black-owned businesses? Black History Month isn't a marketing opportunity. It's a time for genuine reflection and celebration of Black culture and history. Let's look at a recent incident with a notable beauty supply store as a classic example of what not to do. A renowned retailer posted a video of a content creator promoting a straightener while demonstrating on her seemingly untouched 4C hair. The comment section? Filled with disappointment of the retailer for removing products for Black hair care, yet using Black creators and a month of Black history and celebration to increase sales. The content resonated with no one, and many found it contradicted the very essence of celebrating Black heritage. The post was immediately removed. Conscious consumerism is VERY MUCH alive and well, and it's easy to spot when a brand's engagement is superficial. It's high time companies realize this, stop trying to take a shortcut in inclusion, and start building authentic relationships with Black creators and communities. Black History Month needs to be a highlight month that truly honours and uplifts the Black community. This means engaging in ways that are empowering and respectful, not just in February, but all year round.
👉🏾 Black History Month should be a time to uplift, support, encourage, and bring awareness to Black-owned brands and Black people. 👉🏽 In February, organizations should post not just because Black History Month "trends," but also because they are authentically using their platforms to support Black voices, Black-owned brands, and Black culture. What brands can do instead: 👉🏿 Ensure your organization has active Diversity Equity Inclusion & Access (DEIA) initiatives throughout the year. 👉🏻 Implement ways to provide a safe and authentic place for Black employees to thrive and not feel pressured to code-switch. 👉🏾 Utilize your resources and powerful network to introduce and bring Black professionals to the table. Let them be in the room and contribute their ideas and experiences. When brands only post about Black History Month because it's trending, it's obvious. Take a step further and ensure you’re authentically caring and supporting the Black community. ♻️ If this resonates with you, please repost ♻️

Happy Black History Month 🎉🖤 This year's theme, Reclaiming the Narrative, is a powerful reminder of the importance of Black talent owning their stories, voices, and contributions within the media and advertising industry. For far too long, the narrative surrounding Black talent has often been shaped by others, overshadowing the brilliance, creativity, and innovation we bring to the table. Now is the time to take control of our stories, highlight our impact, and redefine how we’re seen and celebrated. Reclaiming the narrative means breaking stereotypes, challenging underrepresentation, and showcasing the true value and diversity Black professionals bring to the industry. By owning our stories, we’re not only empowering ourselves but also inspiring the next generation to step into spaces with confidence and authenticity. At MEFA, we believe that your story matters! Your journey, your achievements, your voice. This month, let’s celebrate those stories, amplify them, and continue the work of reshaping the industry to be more inclusive, equitable, and representative of all communities. Let’s reclaim our narrative, one story at a time. ✊🏾 #MEFA #BlackHistoryMonth #ReclaimTheNarrative #DiversityAndInclusion #BlackExcellence
