After a period of cautious investment, North American startup investors increased their venture funding to $35.2 billion in Q1 of 2024, a 14% rise from the previous quarter, according to findings by Crunchbase. Notable during this quarter were the IPOs of Reddit and Astera Labs, bringing some excitement back to the public markets. Raising money for startups right now is brutal. Venture capital firms are slowing down their investment rounds, rebalancing portfolios, tightening up, being more selective.     Before the panic sets in, I want to say: I think this could be a good thing. What we’re seeing now is a big clean-up. Everyone is in fix mode—we’re at a crossroads - at a tipping point in our industry of innovation. The answer is not that the startups are going to go away, and it’s certainly not “Oh, let the big companies figure it out,” because that has NEVER worked. There’s too much interesting and unique technology out there – there’s so much opportunity! We went through the go-go times when money was cheap, time was extensive and resources flowed freely.  And we lost sight of the fundamentals. So, investors, founders, and leaders are doing hard recalibration.  The investors driving internal rounds, and focused on profitable, proven models.  This is all about going back to the basics of business. Blume Ventures declassified results from its Fund I earlier this week. In the 96-page long report, there are a few key highlights that allow us to peep into the working of Venture Capital funds: 🗞 Deal sourcing: 99% of Blume's deals came through a referral or a network. The importance of a robust network cannot be overemphasized. 🏫 Pedigree: Almost all of Blume's gross returns came from firms with at least one founder from a Tier-1 institution, underlining the significance of belonging to a leading academic institution in India. 👨💼 Experienced Founders: Contrary to the popular myth of founders being college dropouts, >50% of founders under Fund I had work experience of 6+ years. Furthermore, >50% of these founders jumped back into entrepreneurship after exits. 🖥 Dominance of Software and Enterprise Tech: Investments in software and technology outperformed those in other sectors by nearly 3x - hence, the likely inclination of VC funds to invest in the sector. Within this, Climatetech and Deeptech were two of the most important subsectors, with firms such as Carbon Clean and Cashify delivering sky-high returns and massive impact. ➕ Pareto Principle: The top 20% of Blume's portfolio generated 98% of its total gross returns. GreyOrange alone accounted for 150% of the total fund value. Every bet you take will not materialize, but those that do will pay back big time. ⏳ Long Horizon: Lastly and most importantly, VC funds invest with a long-term vision. Most of the fund's returns were realized in the last 3 years. Anyone with a focus on joining/learning more about the VC space is likely to find the report insightful.
