So Sheryl Sandberg now leaves Meta's board of directors, after quitting her post of chief operating officer last year. What does she leave behind? What is her legacy? According to Debra Aho Williamson from Insider Intelligence, "what she built at Facebook is pretty powerful, and will go down in the history books.” Shoshana Zuboff, a professor emerita at Harvard Business School "Sandberg’s work in finding ways to monetize users’ personal data makes her responsible for the wholesale destruction of privacy.” I am with Zuboff. From my point of view, there is nothing to celebrate about Sandberg. She seems to be someone who does not care about the consequences of her actions despite those being blatantly obvious. As various scandals and failures at Meta have been revealed, she has just purposefully followed one goal - making tons of profit. If anything, her legacy is Facebook full of ads - targeted, automated ads. Not something to be proud of on one's deathbed... But I guess it depends on one's values. It will be two years since I left Facebook and I follow Meta and the problems associated with it only for work and professional reasons. I left for several reasons but mainly because I did not want to be a part of the money pump that makes Zuckerberg and those around him even more rich and more powerful. I use other platforms and make sure that all messaging apps I use are encrypted by default. Fortunately, my social bubble has gradually migrated to other platforms too. The times of "if you don't have Facebook, you do not exist" are gone. I still exist 😀. And those at Meta left in Sandberg's wake: your business model is incompatible with the fundamental rights of those who use your platform. Rather than an Inquiry, how about working out what best practice looks like, and legislating that. The *cough* Online Safety Act review might be such an opportunity!

Yesterday I testified on behalf of a state bill called the Age Appropriate Design Code- one of the many attempts at trying to improve young people’s digital experiences online by requiring tech to make their platforms safe-by-design and privacy-by-default for youth. Today in Washington DC, Big Tech CEOs testified about the harms their platforms have caused youth. In a *really rare* moment Mark Zuckerberg apologized to families whose kids have been harmed by social media 😵 It's happening people: public pressure is turning into government attention and hopefully action that will give us all some kind of baseline so we can create a healthier future online.
