Earlier this week, I was privileged to hear from Brian Smith, and I happily shared it with my amazing team at SAGE Business Counsel 🫶 The next morning, a cute post was ready to go and I said go for it. 🌟 What I didn’t notice in the copy was that Brian was listed as the “CEO” when he is actually no longer employed with UGG. Instead, he is its Founder, but not its CEO. 🤓 The fact that we posted this seemingly simple mistake actually points to a very pervasive misunderstanding about entrepreneurship. In the minds of outsiders, bold entrepreneurs and the brands they create are often considered synonymous with one another. In other words… 💜👯♀️ Twinsies 👯♀️💜 lol ok that was a bit much… but let’s be real. In recent years, we’ve seen an increased obsession with founders in the media, and frankly, even in straight-talk entrepreneurial groups. There is a lot of pressure to perform, and to be the “guru” of the company, an all-seeing eye, an all-knowing mind, and and all-loving heart. So easy, right? 😳 And sure, it can be “cult”-like the way some groups operate around the nucleal center, its Founder/CEO, as we have witnessed with the rise and fall of many world famous brands. But as Brian so eloquently pointed out with his mesmerizing stories is that you can “birth” a brand. You can nurture it and then free it. It can also free you. You free it in the same way you would a child. And it frees you as a child would a parent. It is symbiotic but not the same. Distinct, whole, without. A founder can allow a brand to exist separately but interdependently with themselves without sacrificing their own identity, or expecting the brand to conform to theirs. 💯 What a beautiful realization today… 💡Just a small but important error reflecting a deeper misunderstanding many of us continue to perpetuate unknowingly. Image if instead the two were free from one another. Thanks to Brian for the reminder to let our business be free to get it wrong and stumble, grow and reach great potential, and then find itself a new path. A path that is separate but yet still interdependent with its founder. 💪 What a powerful message. 🥰🥰🥰 (And yes, I have to edit the post because I can’t perpetuate the misconception! 🤣)
Our CEO & Founding Attorney, Danielle Laughlin, was inspired by UGG’s Founder, Brian Smith's story. Brian urged EO Atlanta attendees to dive deeper than branding basics. Who are we at our core? What experiences do we want to create? Let's get introspective and build brands that truly connect. We resonated with his message: every setback holds a hidden opportunity. Now, it's time to reframe our challenges and unleash our potential. Who’s joining us this year? #EOAtlanta #SAGEBusinessCounsel #EntrepreneurBranding

Partner at McDermott Will & Emery | Crain's Chicago 40 under 40 | Board of Directors at Legal Aid Chicago
"Being a trial lawyer requires you to think incredibly quickly on your feet with every ounce of concentration you can muster. You play the part of psychotherapist, strategist, field marshal, counselor, ringmaster and actor. You need to excel at the different skill sets required for each role." My colleague Doug Carsten was in graduate school for chemistry when he saw the movie "My Cousin Vinny" and knew he wanted to be a trial lawyer. In this Q&A, Doug shares what he loves most about litigating high-profile and billion-dollar patent cases, and the approach he takes when preparing his clients for trial. Check out his full interview as part of McDermott's On the Stand series in the link below. #patentlitigation #triallawyer

Some thoughts about our PE practice. #alwaysbetter
#Meet Holger Ebersberger: Private Equity partner in our Munich office and music lover. We asked Holger about his thoughts on what sets McDermott´s PE practice apart from other law firms: The private equity teams at McDermott are an integral part of the deal team and provide spot-on commercial advice. We speak our clients’ language and understand their business drivers. In addition, McDermott has a great culture and atmosphere, investing in its people’s futures, celebrating hard work and excellence, and prioritizing happiness. This means creating a culture of belonging in the workplace and supporting its people in living rich, full lives inside and outside the office. #MeetMcDermott

I didn't think superheroes existed until I met former Post Office Sub Postmaster Lee Castleton and his incredible wife at Crafty Fest. Their long battle for justice, after having their entire lives stripped from them, will have an enduring effect on our moral compasses and the ethics of businesses. They will save far more lives than Superman and Superwoman ever could. Thank you, Lee - your tenacity and bravery is truly inspiring. Lee even came along to our panel discussion "Do you Speak Data?" This is a topic which presents both challenges and opportunities for in-house teams of all shapes and sizes. Many thanks to the superb panellists for sharing your insights David Lancelot, Ben Martin, and Reena Patel - you made my role as moderator very easy! Three key takeaways: 1) Ensure you're clear on the story you want to tell, and who you want to tell it to, and leverage data that will help you evidence that story 2) Start small - you only need to go from zero to one, so look for the low hanging fruit to get you off the starting blocks 3) Demonstrate an understanding of the data that your business wants to use and act as an enabler whilst always ensuring ethical standards are met What a truly wonderful event it was Crafty Counsel. Great community, a safe space to speak openly, and an overarching feeling of lawyers wanting to do the right thing #craftyfest Sophie Jackson (nee Taylor)Rosie Dale Heather Rogerson Tina Lepomme Marie-Louise Crompton
