Yet, for the behemoths of the seas – large commercial ships – these drones also pose emerging risks. Is the FAA recreational pilot drone test hard? No, not at all. Our youngest daughter took the recreational pilots test at 12 and passed without any prompts. The FAA has 17 separate entities listed on their website, including Tactical Aviation as a company with which to learn about and then take the test. TruWeather’s CEO, Don Berchoff, presented at the ICAO Drone Enable Symposium in Montreal, Canada, and will speak again tomorrow. Today’s panel focused on the importance of a Performance-Based Weather Standard for the Advanced Air Mobility industry through Weather Information Providers (WIPs). A standardization of weather data allows for an increase in access and reliability of weather information for the drone industry, which will be crucial in reducing risk and uncertainty while flying; especially for those intending to fly beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS). When talking about drone crashes pilot error is the most common cause where fatigue, poor communication, and distraction are related, however, other aspects such as improper preflight check, battery drain, use and set of RTH, reliance on obstacle detection, and poor weather among others, can increase the likelihood of a drone-related incident. This should be an interesting topic. When is this risk reduction and when might this increase the ground risk. How might we assess when and when not to rely on an FTS.

As dog fighting persists and develops within this front, so does the presence of "drone aces". Either realistic figures with actual boastful sucessful operations, groups of operators attached to a singular moniker, or smokescreens invented as an ad hoc psychological/morale booster, either way it's present. For reference see the recent story told in Business Insider (link below) regarding a Russian drone ace Moisey or "Moses" who was blown up by the Ukrainian drone ace "Balu". When flying a drone, never underestimate the importance of planning. Spending many hours planning a simple mission which may only last two hours can be commonplace. Identifying significant air and ground hazards, mitigating risk, obtaining permissions, and planning for flyaway and other incidents is crucial to performing a well executed mission. A documented flight plan and risk assessment is an absolute must. Huge shout out to all the drone pilots out there putting the hours in before boots hit the ground. #drones #airsafety #riskassessment
