South Australians are being invited to share how well they can prepare for bushfire, heatwave, drought, flood, storm/high winds, or earthquake. Supported by the South Australian Fire and Emergency Services Commission (SAFECOM), CFS, SASES, Local Government Association of South Australia (LGA of SA) , and Australian Red Cross, the survey asks about your ability to prepare for disasters, with anonymous results to be provided to emergency services to assist with planning. On CBC national radio last night, we discussed the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM)'s new draft flood maps. Quebec’s new flood risk classification system (from very high to low) makes flood maps more understandable to the public – a positive step forward. However, the new maps do not account for intense rainfall flooding, which caused $2.5 billion in insured losses in Quebec this summer alone. We must be sure to explain that, even if you are not in a floodplain, it does not mean you are not at #floodrisk.... 🎧Listen here (starts at 16m10s): https://lnkd.in/exMbAKF3 Includes great commentary by Nicolas Milot and Dimitrios (Jim) Beis You can also review and comment on the Government of Quebec's new proposed regulatory framework here until Oct 17: https://lnkd.in/eBMzS5Wt #floodresilience

This highlights the importance of using high-granularity data to understand flood risk down to the building level. As the data shows, even if a property is not within designated flood caution areas, many properties are still prone to flooding.
With storms becoming stronger and more frequent due to the changing climate, outdated flood maps can no longer be relied on for proper risk assessment. First Street found that 78% of properties flooded by Hurricane Debby were not in a flood zone! Remember - low risk does not mean no risk. Get flood coverage today.
