There's nothing like seeing someone who looks like you achieve something great in your field. It can be inspiring and motivating. The story of Jeanine, who became the first Black woman to receive her wings in the U.S. Coast Guard, and her mentee La'Shanda, exemplifies the power of representation and mentorship in breaking barriers. This StoryCorps story is a reminder that being the first is a big feat, but it can be equally important to build connections and mentorship to create opportunities for those who come after you. La'Shanda pays tribute to her mentor Jeanine in one of the highest honors by saying, "You've changed my mind about what's possible."

UK Black History Month 2024 is about “Reclaiming Narratives”. I hope this means avoiding the same old mistakes. Maybe it’s time to stop the Flags, Food and Fun. - Flags Celebrating Black employees once a year. But not celebrating them for the rest of the year. - Food Recognising Black employees through their food. But not recognising their work. - Fun Creating room for Black employees to have parties. But not creating room for career success. Flags, Food and Fun. This is Tokenism pretending to be Diversity. Here's how you spot it. - Your identity is welcome. - But your skills and expertise are not. My hope: “Reclaiming Narratives” makes this ancient history. How can you be intentional for Black History Month ? Starting Places: Individually- Learn about the historical time periods, inventions, or contributions not commonly shared from black culture. With your children- Teach your kids basic terms and concepts that are age appropriate. If not.. the world, peers, and media will. Teach your kids that it is not taboo or divisive to talk about race. With your Team- Create opportunities for your team to learn about other cultures and discuss the impact this learning has. DEI work many times is centered around race, specifically Black and African American. Talk to your teams about Why.. Challenege your employees to engage in community, organizational, affinity group events and to keep learning! Senior Leaders -Discuss the actual experience of Black and African employees within your industry, organization, and teams. Research, listen, and learn. Bridge the gap.

Rather than being deterred, I was inspired to create more streams of communication and to share resources in different formats. We have all spent time creating protocols, developing systems and have shared standard operating procedures. What we don’t do a good enough job of is sharing these resources in different ways for our people to feel connected. Communication, Communication, Communication and some more communication. We can all agree that communication is a key component to success in business, strategies, relationships and so much more. Get informed, be inspired and stay connected. Chicago Defender has been a constant fabric in the American black experience. More than a local paper, The Defender has been an engine of ideas and opinions that galvanized black people nationwide. Founded in 1905,The Chicago Defender celebrated its 115th Anniversary in 2020 and the evolution being recognized nationally as the 2nd most widely read and best African-American Newspaper by Nielson and Essence Survey 2014.
