Yesterday, I had the opportunity to join Jennifer Parks on a Habitat for Humanity Chicago (HFHC) neighborhood tour. We explored two neighborhoods, Greater Grand Crossing and West Pullman, that have been significantly impacted by HFHC's initiatives. Serving on the Habitat for Humanity Chicago Board has given me a deeper perspective as it pertains to the impact that the organization has on a quarterly and yearly basis, yet, nothing compares to seeing the tangible outcomes of HFHC’s efforts and discussing its forward-looking vision. This experience left me invigorated and excited about the boundless potential of HFHC. For my contacts in the Chicago area who haven’t yet gotten involved with HFHC, I highly recommend that you consider doing so. HFHC’s strategic neighborhood approach includes four primary components: strengthening the neighborhood housing market, connecting the community, elevating neighborhood appeal, and enhancing the physical environment. These efforts are bolstered by ambitious five-year goals, which include increasing the number of houses built or rehabilitated by fourfold, reaching a total of 100 houses. Additionally, they aim to triple the number of participants in affordable homeownership programs, and double the number of volunteers, aiming for a total of 25,000 over five years. These ambitious initiatives are just the tip of the iceberg, and your involvement could make a significant difference! In a landscape characterized by disconnection and isolation, partnership and collaboration are what drive successful outcomes.

“What does this say about our priorities, and what does it say about how we treat people who are experiencing one of the hardest things they’ve ever had to go through in life.” Ben Smith, CEO Mornington Community Support Centre. Almost 4,000 people are on a waiting list for public housing on the Mornington Peninsula. A third of our residents are experiencing some form of rental stress. Too many in our community are sleeping rough on our foreshores or in their cars. There is one crisis accommodation facility on the Mornington Peninsula - The Ranch. The Ranch is entirely community-funded and managed by @MorningtonCommunitySupportCentre, @SouthernPeninsulaCommunitySupportCentre and @WesternPortCommunitySupportCentre. The future of The Ranch is uncertain. We are very proud to be working with @Peninsula Films to tell the story of the people for whom The Ranch is home. And we’d love to see you at the premiere screening of The Ranch - at Peninsula Cinemas Rosebud on Monday August 5th at 7pm, as part of Homelessness Week. There’ll be a Q&A to follow the screening that will unpack some of the issues uncovered in the film, and what you can do to be part of the solution. Our hope is that the film will help inform conversations locally, and provide a sense of urgency to policy makers, to create change. For this Community Clean-Up (PHX) our volunteers will be meeting up at SUNNYSLOPE COMMUNITY CENTER, located at 802 E. Vogel Ave, Phoenix, AZ! NO OPEN-TOED SHOES Cleaning up loose trash is one of the best ways to pitch in for your community and the environment. Volunteering as a means to help conserve and protect the environment has a lot of upsides. Of course, the first is that you’ll be taking care of our planet, and it badly needs a little love given the myriad ways in which we’ve become adept at destroying it. But beyond that, volunteering for a cause you care about is a great way to meet like-minded people, make friends, and pull yourself out of the blues that sometimes accompany caring a lot about something important – especially if you feel alone in your endeavors. None of us like the sight of litter. Litter spoils the look of where we live but that’s not the only reason for picking up litter. There are a number of benefits from picking up litter that you may not have considered before. Volunteer-led projects such as these are one of the quickest, simplest, and least expensive ways to inspire more community spirit and civic action. A visually appealing community increases property values, attracts businesses, and improves the neighborhood's image. Beauty is one of the three most influential factors in community attachment, which means loyalty, to your particular town or city.
