[Morning Shot: Will Xi Jinping’s attendance at the BRICS Summit be a game-changer for China and Russia's "no limits" partnership?] Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit Russia for the BRICS summit in Russia next month. This was revealed by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on his recent trip to St Petersburg, Russia, ahead of Xi’s trip. Xi last visited Russia in March last year and Putin reciprocated with his own trip to China in October that year. The two leaders have since also met in Beijing in May, where Putin took the first foreign trip of his fifth presidential term, and in Kazakhstan in July. Where does China stand in promoting “balanced, objective and rational voices” to create conditions for an early ceasefire and a political settlement of the Ukraine war, and where are China-Russia ties headed? On this episode of Morning Shot, Dr Chong Ja Ian, Associate Professor from the Department of Political Science at the National University of Singapore Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences shares his insights. At the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed key leaders, including China's Xi Jinping and India's Narendra Modi, aiming to showcase Russia's global relevance despite its political isolation due to the Ukraine conflict. Putin highlighted deepening cooperation with China, especially in countering Western influence. Modi, while reaffirming India’s strong strategic partnership with Russia, emphasized the need for peaceful resolutions in Ukraine. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa also underscored Russia’s historical support and partnership. The summit, the first since BRICS expanded, marks a pivotal moment for the bloc, as it seeks to offer an alternative to Western-led global institutions like the G7. Discussions focused on fostering stronger economic and strategic ties, particularly among Global South nations. China’s Xi emphasized the importance of stability through Sino-Russian cooperation, framing it as crucial to a just world order. India and China, despite their differences, continue to provide significant economic support to Russia, reflecting the shifting dynamics of global power. Sources: AFP, AP, dpa, Reuters So What: This is a significant show of strength by BRICS and while it is likely that most member states don't trust each other they clearly are willing to work together for economic reasons. It is likely that some of these states are looking to benefit from the current geopolitical tensions to get good trade deals with China and cheap gas from Russia. Peeking at Peking: China, India and the World by Dr Srinivasan R ___________________ 1962 was a watershed moment in Sino-Indian Relations. Did China’s unilateral ceasefire and withdrawal result from its internal political compulsions? Is China using India to steady its political boat in internal turbulent weather? Did China agree to withdraw from Galwan merely due to India’s offensive posture? How did China go about building its aircraft carriers and how does it use artificial islands and villages to surreptitiously lay claim to sovereignty? How will the cashless trap that China is casting engulf the world? These and many such questions are critically looked at in the essays contained in this book. Stepping aside from the contemporary outlook and adopting a historical and methodical approach, the essays provide perspectives that are critical to understanding the Dragon, its compulsions, aspirations and outreach. Each essay relies on source material that render the analysis and argument substantial value, enabling a comprehensive appreciation of Chinese intent.

https://lnkd.in/d_EzpGeE India Gives China the Cold Shoulder Conflict between the two countries has intensified in recent years, prompting New Delhi to deepen its ties with the U.S. Sadanand Dhume Sept. 25, 2024 5:45 pm ET Amid the general disarray of U.S. foreign policy, the strengthening of the Quad—a partnership among the U.S., India, Japan and Australia aimed at preventing China from dominating Asia—stands out as a rare positive development. Leaders of the four countries met in Delaware over the weekend, the sixth such meeting since 2021. They pledged to work together on a range of initiatives, from Coast Guard patrols to cancer-treatment efforts to scientific-research fellowships. India’s enthusiasm for the Quad—revived by President Trump in 2017 after a nearly decade-long hiatus—marks an important shift in Asian geopolitics. It underscores that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has shed its hesitance about deepening ties with the U.S. lest it offend China.

#XiJinping Unwavering on #Taiwan, Unconcerned About #Economy: Secret #War Fund Strategy! This week's meeting between #US President #Biden and #CCP head Xi Jinping is undoubtedly a hot news topic. Many mainstream media are saying that this marks an improvement in Sino-U.S. relations, or that Xi Jinping is eager to show goodwill towards the US. However, internal information from the CCP indicates that Xi Jinping's determination to take Taiwan has not changed, and this determination will not be affected by the economic downturn in China because he has other ways to solve the funding problem for attacking Taiwan. https://lnkd.in/dyXEu5pB

The rise of Xi Jinping to the helm of Chinese leadership is a complex and fascinating story, marked by both calculated political maneuvering and a touch of historical serendipity. Early Life and Political Beginnings: Red Roots: Born in 1953, Xi is the son of Xi Zhongxun, a prominent communist revolutionary who was purged during the Cultural Revolution. This experience shaped Xi's worldview and instilled in him a deep loyalty to the party. Provincial Powerhouse: Xi spent his early political career climbing the ranks in various provincial positions, earning a reputation for pragmatism and effectiveness. His stint as governor of Fujian, bordering Taiwan, saw him oversee rapid economic growth. Politburo Standing Committee: In 2007, Xi was elevated to the prestigious Politburo Standing Committee, the apex of power in China. This marked his official entry into the national leadership circle. Consolidation of Power: Crown Prince Emerges: Over the next five years, Xi strategically built his power base within the party, forging alliances and eliminating potential rivals. He carefully cultivated his public image, projecting strength and charisma. Anti-Corruption Campaign: Xi launched a much-publicized anti-corruption drive, purging both low-level and high-ranking officials. This move bolstered his image as a reformer and consolidated his grip on the party apparatus. Ascent to the Top: General Secretary and President: In 2012, Xi Jinping formally assumed the positions of General Secretary of the Communist Party and President of China, succeeding Hu Jintao. Era of Xi Jinping: Since then, Xi has steadily consolidated his power, centralizing decision-making and eliminating term limits for the presidency. He has also cultivated a cult of personality, with his image and ideology permeating all aspects of Chinese society. Key Pillars of Xi's Rule: National Rejuvenation: Xi has championed the goal of "national rejuvenation," seeking to restore China's historical greatness and make it a leading global power. This ambition drives his policies across various domains, from economic development to military modernization. Party Supremacy: Xi emphasizes the primacy of the Communist Party, rejecting any notion of political liberalization or democratization. He has tightened control over civil society, media, and the internet. Assertive Foreign Policy: Under Xi, China has taken a more assertive stance on the international stage, challenging US dominance and pursuing territorial claims in disputed areas like the South China Sea. Xi's legacy remains a work in progress. While his supporters hail him as a visionary leader who has restored China's dignity and prosperity, critics raise concerns about his authoritarian tendencies, human rights abuses, and potential for geopolitical instability.
