Lessons learned by the CEO of the Science based targets initiative: 📈Scope three emissions are on average 11 times higher. —> Especially upstream is a challenge. —> Usually easiest change is made in supplier engagement. There you should focus on the 20% of suppliers with highest emissions. 🙌🏽 Science Based Targets initiative has started programs for supplier engagement. Ryanair's vicious, and quite personal, online targeting of out-going Green Party leader and Government Minister ( Transport & Environment, Climate/Communications) Eamon Ryan has been akin to the playbook of anonymous social media trolls and climate change deniers. Denial, deflection and delay, in the face of evident disastrous environmental, social and humanitarian impacts, are the tactics of corporate vested interests who are profiting from an emissions-based market and favour short-term shareholder gain over long-term benefit for all. It raises questions for the Ryanair board - for its obligations to sustainability, and the net-zero transition - and the role the company is playing in literally fuelling climate action obstruction - with the pitiful 'flights not bikes'. Business, and boards, can not afford to put blinkers on and pretend it is 'business as usual' and that a 10 year vision for an aviation business does not involve transformative change - and requires radical and rapid innovation in its business model. Criticism, and critiques, of political leaders and policies is both valid and necessary but to indulge in the level of abuse, insults and petty tirades that we've seen pour out of Ryanair's social content degrades everyone. Ryanair, like any business, needs to make its case - based on evidence - not personal attacks. Shifting business to regional airports in Ireland is a positive for everyone - a lot of Dublin airport's traffic is people travelling by car from outside county Dublin to try and park in the airport - we have under-used regional bases that could reduce that pressure on Dublin airport - and some of those airports are closer to train networks ( Kerry is 1.4 km to train link with just five flights in and out yesterday for example). Ireland is an island and yes we do need, and want, transport links across the world but that need must also reflect the demands of creating a viable future for all and Ryanair, as a hugely important and historically innovative Irish company, has to play its part. Name-calling from the sidelines because it doesn't like the pitch, or the referee, helps no-one. And yes I get that this is Ryanair's PR attack plan - but has it actually taken a view that none of its customer base or clients are pro-nature, pro-environment and support climate and emissions action to enable a better future for all? Or that - if it has those customers - it doesn't want them?. All governing parties in Ireland have supported and implemented the Climate Action Plan - this is not just a Green Party issue - nor is it personal to one person and one leader. Perhaps the Ryanair Board of Directors should ask themselves some questions ? Is this the legacy they want to leave for the coming generation born this year, for their own children and grandchildren, or grand nieces and nephews? With regard to my posts on taking the Chair at Metrol Group Inc (MGI) and the Environmental Energy Group LLC (EEG), I will try hard to respond to all those who have so kindly offered me congratulations and best wishes.As they literally run into hundreds, please forgive me if I miss someone out, just know that, as always, I greatly appreciate your support. I take on such roles not simply for the title, can't even impress my beloved Mother anymore (RIP), but to position me better to help the companies in question get ahead by contributing 4 decades of international business experience, both corporate and financial, as well as to leverage my extensive global network built over the same period. My primary focus are the ESG and impact sectors. In this legacy period of my career, indeed my life, I am more interested in doing good and helping others get ahead than making money albeit a little of the latter, with my young family (I am 78 and have children of 12 and 10!), is always appreciated. Often the people behind these companies are brilliant technologists who want to address climate change and the increasing damage to our eco-systems. They have a vision to make their contribution to "save the world". We should all applaud them for their efforts. Such is the case with MGI and EEG where Roy McAlister and Robert Feller, respectively, have developped truly disruptive and game changing technologies. I view it as my responsibility to do all I can, very much including securing funding, to turn their vision into a commercial reality. I would view it as extremely negligent on my part if I left these patents to gather dust on the shelf thereby denying humankind the opportunity to benefit therefrom.....
