Happy Labor Day! 🎉 If you have forgotten the “why” behind this holiday, here’s a quick recap: According to History.com, Labor Day was an outcome of the harsh changes happening as America moved from agriculture to an industrial society. The working conditions in factories were unsafe, the pay was abysmal, and immigrants and the “lower class” were taken advantage of—working 12-hour days and 7-day weeks…not by choice. They were barely getting by financially. This led to marches and strikes by workers across the US and Canada against unfair practices. A key turning point in the US for the worker was the Pullman Palace Railroad Strike in Chicago, involving over 250,000 workers across 27 states. This strike lasted over 2 months and held up freight and passenger trains west of Detroit. Over 30 deaths were attributed to the strike. In an effort to get trains running again, President Grover Cleveland sent in the Army to break up the strike, resulting in more deaths and chaos. When it was learned what happened, Grover Cleveland realized he had to do damage control. This led to Congress passing legislation to have a National Worker’s Holiday just 6 days after the end of the strike. Grover Cleveland later signed it into law. We’ve made significant progress as a workforce and nation in terms of workers’ rights. However, there's still work to be done, especially in advocating for fair conditions for historically underrepresented communities. As we enjoy this well-deserved weekend off, let’s also continue our efforts towards ensuring fair and equitable workplaces for all 🌟 #JenniferTardyConsulting #TeamJTC #LaborDay

When leadership is "out of touch", they always will inevitably feel the burn. I will always: 👉Value my people 👉Invest in their growth 👉Welcome & address criticism Why? 1. By valuing your people, it reminds us how much we are able to achieve through the efforts of a team, and how each team member contributes to overall success. No man is an island. 2. By investing in their growth, you invest in your business. Business is competitive and constantly changing. Their growth improves their ability to drive bigger success & increases their drive to help you grow so they can grow with you. 3. Welcoming criticism is important to be able to reflect on our short to long term goals. Leaders are people, just like everyone else. People, no matter how great, can get blindsided, so having a culture where we welcome criticism allows us to reflect & discuss our decisions and future direction.

Having worked in strategy and communications for the UK government, I've observed firsthand that their strategies are often lacking, implementation is light, and the entire circus frequently revolves around communication (optics) rather than true transformation and change. This insight is particularly relevant when examining the UK government's latest proposal on sick pay. The UK government's track record on fostering healthy economic growth has been shocking at best, and this latest proposal is no exception. While providing sick pay from day one for seven million workers sounds appealing, it's crucial to approach it skeptically. The Labour government's proposal is heavy on 'optics' but light on substance, with potentially problematic implementation. This plan raises several red flags: potential economic stagnation, overwhelming administrative burdens, and unintended consequences like incentivising absenteeism or #masking #productivity #issues. Easy access to sick pay from day one could potentially hide deeper issues related to employee engagement, workplace culture, or overall productivity. Implementation challenges loom large, given the government's poor track record in balancing worker protections with business needs. Funding concerns persist, hinting at possible tax hikes or budget cuts. While worker protections are important, the government's history of misguided policies suggests this proposal may backfire. A more nuanced, economically sound approach is crucial for sustainable UK growth. #EconomicStrategy #WorkerProtections #SmartGrowth

Happy Labor Day folks! Did you know the labor day parade on September 5, 1882, was actually a strike, with 10,000 workers took unpaid leave, marched through the streets to demonstrate strength of the labor organization. However, the origin of Labor Day is debated, with Peter J. McGuire, co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, often credited for proposing the holiday to honor workers. But, some believe Matthew Maguire, a machinist and secretary of New York's Central Labor Union, played a key role in establishing the celebration in 1882. It wasn't until 1916, after 400,000 railroad workers threatened to strike, that the eight-hour workday became law. To prevent a nationwide railroad shutdown, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Adamson Act, establishing the eight-hour workday as the legal standard. With that being said, the labor day protest on the working conditions during the Industrial Revolution changed the labor laws that included child labor, giving health benefits and assistance to workers who are injured and retired. So, how are you celebrating this holiday? #laborday #labordayweekend #laborrights #didyouknow #mokkup #laborlaws #labordayhistory #funfacts #laborunion

Very interesting!! This is why fractional roles and outsourcing is going to become even more popular in the UK. Companies will not want to take risks and end up having to pay large sums in sick pay, or lose out on productivity.. Are you planning to hire Admin, Sales, Marketing or IT staff in the near future? If the positions are not customer facing then this can be outsourced, or if they are then you can look at the Fractional route. Drop us a call and find out how we can help solve this problem and save you up to 40% of in-house roles. #outsourcing #bpo #leadgeneration #sales #fractional #marketing

Just a reminder on "Labour Day" that you have this day off, despite what employers want, is because of the hard work of unions and workers standing up to their employers to demand better treatment. As the real International Day of The Worker is May 1, this is NOT labour day. But Canada and the US are so opposed to Communism, Socialism and unions as a whole, we need to wait 4 months to "celebrate" it. A quick bit of history as to why. "The date they chose was 1 May, the anniversary of an 1886 strike in Chicago that ended in bloodshed known as the Haymarket Riot. That date had been chosen to celebrate a victory almost a decade earlier establishing the eight-hour workday, that incidentally was never enforced. After a series of bloody incidents between workers and the authorities, Congress finally passed legislation to establish the first of September as Labor Day in 1894, hoping to move away from the united, international working class celebration of 1 May." So you have a 5 day work week because of this, but in Canada we obediently followed the Americans lead and set this day as a holiday. Next May 1, celebrate the true labour day and International Day of The Worker.

Why do we celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday in September? The holiday began because of battles between unions and business, so why do we celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday of every September? While most people think of Labor Day as the unofficial end of summer -- it is actually a celebration of workers. Its origins actually reflect how far worker’s rights have come in this country. At the height of the industrial revolution in the late 19th century the average American worked 12-hour days, seven days a week. And even though it was illegal in some states, children as young as five did back-breaking labor in factories, mines and mills across the country. Around the same time, labor unions started to pop up demanding better treatment for workers. Strikes and rallies broke out, sometimes turning violent. But some were peaceful, including a march on September 5, 1882, in New York City that is considered the first Labor Day parade in U.S. history. Soon, the holiday caught on in other industrial hubs around the country. It took another 12 years for Labor Day to become a national holiday. In 1894, employees of the Pullman Palace car company in Chicago went on strike. That ended up crippling railroad traffic nationwide. The federal government sent troops to break up the strike, resulting in more than a dozen workers being killed. In an attempt to settle the unrest, Congress made Labor Day a national holiday. Now, American workers get a long weekend at the end of summer for a little rest and relaxation. #lancesoft #americanlabourday #lancesoft #recruiter #usrecruiter #labourdaycelebration #labourday2024 #workerday #labourdaycelebration2024 #itrecruiters
