Recently, I met with a Black Employee Network, and we discussed the impact of code-switching on our career progression. For those unfamiliar with the term, I describe code-switching on page 56 of my book, Let Go Leadership, as "adapting the presentation of oneself in ways that disconnect one from the cultural or racial stereotypes of their group." We often talks about the impact and engagement of volunteering initiatives and the success is often measured by the impact and engagement of the participants. Something often forgotten in the system is the team. If the team is engaged, do they get a feeling of belonging and do they feel like their skills are utilised right. We often forget the important factor in volunteering initiatives, "the volunteer". Often, they are taken for granted and assumed that we don't have to ask them questions. A lot of initiatives just manages the volunteers like employees who are ignored but are expected to work. Breaking out of this cycle is important but no easy. Initiatives like what Shatakshi and Saptarshi have done enables better understanding the volunteers and create a culture of recognition, growth and taking-care-of-the-team-and-each-other-mentality. It is great to see a bunch of people asking the right questions in the system!
