What returns will VCs earn from their early-stage climate tech investments? No one really knows, but the team at PitchBook paints a pretty rosy picture! (https://lnkd.in/ebe9nWfP) Here are my takeaways. ➡ Huge improvement. Since 2017, when it was the lowest ranked vertical, climate tech has improved the most -- moving up to the sixth best vertical. ➡ Massive valuation increase. Median early stage climate tech pre-money valuations have increased the most (+28.9%) compared to other verticals. ➡ Average return profile. Like any VC portfolio, there is a wide variation in climate tech return distributions. But, the "average" climate tech investment should mimic overall early-stage VC returns going forward. ➡ Strong IPO potential. Climate tech has the second highest expected IPO share of successful exits at 4.8%. ➡ Top patents & employee growth. Climate tech has the highest share of published patents (11.5%) and the highest employee growth (+8.8%).
