𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗗𝗼 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆? 👨🏫 On September 24, we had the pleasure of hosting Stefan Zeisberger from Radboud University/University of Zurich. He presented his new study titled “𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘋𝘰 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘚𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘺? 𝘌𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘙𝘰𝘣𝘰 𝘈𝘥𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘳 𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴,” co-authored by Lars Hornuf (TU Dresden) and Christoph Merkle (Aarhus University). 🤖 The authors conducted a field experiment with a robo-advisor involving participants who were actual customers investing their own money. The robo-advisor randomly offered new customers the option to either opt-in or opt-out of a sustainable investment plan vs. a conventional investment. After investing, the customers were then surveyed on their beliefs about sustainable investments. 🌳 The authors find that when sustainable investing was set as the default option, more people chose it compared to when they had to explicitly opt-in (36% vs. 23%). Investors’ beliefs about whether sustainable investments will outperform conventional ones in the future were closely aligned with their chosen investment plans. This indicates that both conventional and sustainable investors select their plans based on the belief that they will yield higher risk-adjusted returns. Thus, sustainable investors may still be primarily motivated by economic considerations rather than a willingness to forgo potential returns. 👉 The study will 𝘀𝗼𝗼𝗻 be available on the authors' webpages (Stefan's page: https://lnkd.in/epVurReA) ❓ What are your thoughts on these findings? Do you think default options could reshape investment behaviour? Thanks Stefan for presenting your work and the nice chat. We will think about having the "bike option" as the default option ;-)
